Winterizing- I'm doing something wrong
Hi All,
This weekend after draining everything I could I started adding antifreeze using the hose at the bypass next to the water pump. (I had already emptied the hot water tank and set the valve to bypass at the bottom of the hot water tank). After successfully doing all the cold side I started doing the hot side. Two gallons later I still didn't get any water coming out any faucet and I could hear a hiss as air came out the faucets so I pulled the anode plug (which I had only put in finger tight) and got soaked in antifreeze from the anode hole. I am confused. I understood that there must be some sort of check valve on the top pipe into the water heater otherwise what's the point to a bypass on the lower side only?
At this point I'm not sure where I stand. I don't intend to fill the hot water tank with 10 gallons of antifreeze. Do I leave it as it is? Do I blow out everything and leave it? Do I blow out everything and pump antifreeze through the whole system(again)!. If so how do I keep it from entering the water heater from the top?
Also, I have since heard that I should just dump a few gallons into the fresh water tank and pump it from there. If so, why do they give us the special hose next to the water pump? And pump it with what? Does the water pump pump city water too?
Finally, do I need to put a gallon or so in each holding tank?
Soaked and frustrated!
