Beware, the Thieves
I just received this "SNOPES APPROVED" e-mail. Thought I would pass it along for maximum dissemination....
An interesting E-mail a friend sent to
> me...............Valuable info.
>
> How to Lock Your Car and Why this is Not a Joke!
>
> I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door
> unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times.
> Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear
> it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and
> there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next
> to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and
> there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very
> weird situation. I quickly chucked the errand I was on,
> jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the

It sounds like it used to be a possiblity, but the technology has adapted some.

I wouldn't put it past the techno geeks to come up with a better system nowdays. Food for thought though.

Thanks, Dave. I discounted it because if that were true, it wouldn't take an act of Congress for me to get a duplicate Fob, Went through that in McCall en at the Ford dealership. If the thieves had that ability, the Ford dealership would have it. (Or know about it..)

Ozz, I lost my keys/fob for my Ford about six years ago...it took the people at the dealership about an hour to do whatever it was they did to "program" a new fob for me...to the tune of about $150!!! Michael

it sounds like somebody has a frequency counter and generator thats all a key fob is a transmitter of a frequency.

OK, try this: Your FOB sends one set of codes to lock your vehicle and another set of codes to unlock. So if they capture the locking code all they should be able to do is lock your vehicle. I would think they would have to capture your unlock code when you returned to your vehicle, then they could follow hoping you had other stops near by. Dealers by jumper certain terms on the OBC plug can program a new FOB in minutes.
Just my thoughts, backed up by reading the entire post as Rich suggested. Per Snopes that e-mail was not approved by them

The technology does indeed exist, and not just for car locks, but for garage door openers. After all, as has been said, they are simply radio waves. BUT... the equipment that is capable of recieving, decoding and resending the signals is A) not readily available except to law enforcement and B) expensive.
So while it is possible, so is getting hit by a meteorite!

Here is how the rolling code system works. One trillion combinations! Doesn't seem too easy to "pick".

Depending on the model and year of the car, some fobs do not need anything to be programmed, just close proximity to the vehicle and push the right combination of buttons.
