What's it like on the coast near Brownsville? I've been told it's real nice.

The Texas Coast from Brownsville all the way to Port Arthur is very flat with salt grass marshes extending inland a couple of miles or more in some places. On Padre Island it has large sand dunes that act as a barrier for the mainland from the storms. There is some commercial development at South Padre, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Matagorda and in the Galveston area, other wise the beaches are very remote, isolated and undeveloped. Most are only accessible by boat or by ATV's.

Charlie,

I just found my way back to this post. Thanks for the information. What are the winter RVing possibilities like in that area?

I have seen lots of vacancies at the parks around McAllen. Hard to say how it will be after Jan. 1 as a lot of people don't get to the valley until then. Best thing to do is do a search of the web-sites and make inquiries.

Dennis-
Sorry about not seeing your question sooner, have been on the road and just been home a couple days. Part of our trip was to the Port Aransas area and we were there over New Year's. We were parked in the Nueces County Park on the beach close to the ship channel. We did have W&E where we were but there is dry camping on the beach, many folks do this. There are also many parks in the Port Aransas/Corpus Christi area that have full hook ups.

In the area where I live there are also parks in the Galveston, Brazosport, Matagorda area with full hookups and good and free access to the beaches. Although usually quite mild here, the weather is usually a little warmer and dryer in the Port Aransas/Corpus Christi area as I am a couple hundred miles to the NE.

Thanks Charlie. When I was in the Navy the controllers I talk to, that had been stationed in Corpus Christi, always remarked how beautiful it was there. After we retire (this time next year or spring of 2007) we are strongly thinking of becoming "Winter Texans". This would give us the advantage of sometimes seeing my parents who winter in Florida. We have traveled through Texas from El Paso to Houston and like the West Texas winter weather around Junction City but thought it might still get cold there on occasion. So we have been very interested in the posts in this section of the MOC. Most of our local friends and relatives do the Quartzite thing and we have tried that and will probably begin each winter in that area. The first full winter after retirement we thought we would move east after Quartzite so as to be in Florida in March to start a loop through the NE to visit relatives getting us back to Idaho late in June or early in July in time to take care of the house and start our backcountry motorcycle camping trips. The alternate plan is to continue north to visit friends in Canada and relatives in Alaska and getting back to Idaho in the late summer or early fall, we just have to see how things work out. Thanks again for the information. We’ll be reading the “Winter Texan’s” posts so I’m sure we will probably feel like we know a few of you before we ever meet.

Great to hear that there will be more MOCers in the Valley. We've had some great gatherings already and look forward to meeting even more new owners. Be sure and check another thread under RGV as you will be here for the tour of the Texas museum on February 2nd. You might want to sign up.

We also have a thread about a mini-rally in Georgia at the end of March. We'd love to have you join us for that one.

It is not exactly warm this morning at 37 degrees, we arrived yesterday at Bensten Palms Village site #820. Met with some other MOC'ers last night and had a campfire chat. Coats and
blankets were required.
