I would also add as others have said, get a descent multi meter & learn the basics of what you can do with it, its a great troubleshooting tool.At the very least a test light works most of the time or get a little fancy with power probe circuit tester, it supplies both power & ground.

I keep getting ejected for multimeter class. It seems folks do not find it as funny as I do when a loud clap is done....just as the leads touch.

Spent ten yrs managing an auto parts store and can tell you that(with automobiles) MOST battery problems are dirty posts , voltage reads low and thus gets overcharged. Or problems with charging/ regulation circuits. Battery is “usually” the Victim. Had a the battery on a forklift blow up while I was sitting on it. REALLY gets your attention! Smells of rotten eggs too!
