Torque???

How often do you check your wheels and re torque. I check every trip and check the torque every 1000 miles. Is this good?

after the first 10-25-50mi intervals and the torque has stabilized, I just check before each trip, to make sure im good and add air if needed at the same time

I used to check before each trip. But after the initial set after new tires were put on, there was hardly ever any change. So now I only check a few times each season. Just checked mine for the first time a couple weeks ago since last trip last fall. Only 3-4 nuts took barely a fraction of a turn.

Check both tire pressure and wheel lug torque every morning before we hit the road. Use my IR temp unit to check tire, wheel and hub temp each time we have a rest stop.

Check about four times a year. Never have found one even a little loose.

Still remember a couple years ago, prior to changing to the G614's, after replacing one of the Marathons with a new one, the next day, prior to leaving, was checking torque, and the neighbor questioned why I was doing this, leaving no doubt he thought I was doing something stupid. I just pointed to the label on the side of the rig. Didn't want to start an argument, and like it was any of his business anyway, so I just politely ignored him. Just wonder if he ever lost one of his wheels, and they were aluminum too.

After having my bearings repacked at my Montana Dealer in San Antonio, I hooked up the Monty at the dealer and re-torqued all the wheels. They were all needing it! The service manager saw what I was doing and told me that I was the first client he had ever seen do it and congratulated me on it. Kind of makes you wonder about the other 99.9% who just charge down the road.

Well you would think that would be something that the dealer would have done for you. Make me wonder about dealerships?

Does not hurt to check it as much as you see fit. Over the years we found that after the initial checks after changing a tire they do not change. We still check on a quarterly schedule but have not seen a change in a long time.

Many vehicles have aluminum/alloy wheels as does my Dodge 3500, the only time they are ever checked is when a wheel has been taken off for whatever reason.. My thinking is the same with the wheels on my Montana, if a wheel is taken off then after 100 miles they should definitely be checked, this is assuming they were properly torqued when the wheel was put back on.

I check mine perhaps once a year unless as stated above, they should not come loose on a RV anymore than your TV.

Some feel the need to check them before each trip, that is their preference and you should do whatever you are comfortable with, I personally don't feel the need and have never had a loose wheel nut.

Lug nuts on the trailer will loosen from the extreme side loads the wheels experience when making turns. The TV does not have these kinds of loads due to there being only a single axle on each end of the vehicle and when making turns, there is not the scubbing of the tires as the turns are made. In addition to the side stresses on the wheels, the trailer is usually loaded close to the maximum rating of the axles and wheels, which adds to the load stresses the wheels see. Better to check the torque occasionally, than see one of the trailer's wheels traveling past you as you drive down the road.

I'm with BB_TX on this one. I used to check mine, along with suspension bolts about every other month. Everything was always fine and seldom needed any turns so now it is about once a year for me.

If you have recently mounted tires then checking at 50, 100, 200, and 500 miles should be adequate - that is, you'll find the lugs are quite set until you remove them once again, since trailer tires are stressed especially on turns. In my case, we fulltime and travel about every 3 weeks and only go 100 miles from place to place, so some might say I check too often, but a few bolts always seem to need just a hair of movement since I do a torque and psi check the day prior to EVERY trip. Doesn't hurt. What hurts is not checking... at all... ever... If you find your lug nuts are real loose all the times, then worry about the cause, until then, it's just good to check.
