Truck bed cover
Hi All,
Wife is wanting a cover on the truck bed. I have no tool box or aux fuel tank. The possibility of a tool box and or fuel tank is not out of the question, so I need to plan ahead.
Your suggestions and brands that work well are appreciated. Or if you have had one and do not want a second one, why?
Thanks Jim

I saw one of these, http://www.softopper.com/ford-f-350-...p-details.aspx , on a truck the other day and it was real slick. We are thinking real serious about buying one for our truck. We wouldn't be without some kind of cover for the bed. What folks can't see they "usually" don't mess with.

I have a Pace Edwards Full Metal Jackrabbit cover on mine. Also had one on my previous '07 F350 for 5 yrs before trading it.
My truck is also my daily driver and I often carry a small tool chest, maybe a chain saw, other equipment and/or materials, etc. in the bed. I can lock the tailgate and cover to keep it hidden.
When towing, I often put stuff in the bed in front of the hitch and pull the cover back near the hitch to cover that front area. And when unhooked, I pull the cover back all the way to cover everything. Locks every 6".
Has worked well for me. I caught my 6 yr (at the time) nephew jumping on the first one like a trampoline and it did no damage.
But since it has a cannister at the front for the top to roll up in I think it would be difficult to also put in an aux tank and/or tool box.
I had a soft cover on an earlier F150. It was OK. BUT. It had plastic snaps. And during cold weather if I unsnapped it and rolled it up, it was very difficult to roll it back out and get those cold hard plastic snaps back on. I would want metal snaps or velcro if I did that again.
People might pluck something out of the open bed of truck, but not likly to break into a locked cover unless they knew something of value was there to steal. Unless, of course, you were parked in an isolated area, then all bets are off.

You can go to bedcover.com and there are several good brands and types out there. Depends on how much you want to spend and whether you want a rollup, foldup, velcroz, snaps, etc.. You can still have a toolbox, ours just comes up to the bedrails, and cover sits nicely over it.

Check out the RetraxPro unit. I've got the regular Retrax and really like it but the Pro covers all of the holes in the toprail of the truck bed and looks much more of a finished job. Know numerous MOC members that have the Pro and really like it. The reason I have the regular Retrax is because I tranfered it from my previous TV to the present.

I have the Retrax Pro on my 2012 F250 and really love it. You can stop it in any position and it slides over my Reese r16 hitch when not in use (removing the handle). Many compliments, very tough and light weight and lockable. Lifetime warranty. I had a scratch on mine from dropping a tool and they sent me a touch up pen free to match it. (good as new) Great service as well. Had it over a year and very happy so far.

I have a TonnoPro fold up cover (as opposed to roll-up). I've had it for a couple years now and like it. It does the job and wasn't very expensive.

Retraxpro here and love it. As said you can lock it at any position on the rails. Looks great.
Covers our Super fifth 20k hitch without having to remove anything.
Would highly recommend it.

Any thoughts on the TruXedo brand. The Retrax Pro is great looking but not in the budget.

I have had a TruXedo for five years. I choose the "Deuce" model (opens at the front as well as the rear) and love it. The company warranties the covers for life. I have had a couple of rubber seals deteriorate and they shipped me replacements with no hassle.

Ditto on the Truexdo. Three years out side in the Florida sun and still looks like new. I just hose it off and wipe on Aerospace 303 which is endorsed by the company.

I have had the Truxedo Lo Pro QT for about 4 years. It suits my needs very nicely. I like it because I can take the rolled up cover off in just a couple of seconds to be able to haul the dirt bikes around. Can't haul the bikes with it because the front wheels of the bikes need to press against the front of the box when strapped in. Also, because of the cam-lock clamps that are used to hold the cover's rails to the bed rails, the entire cover and rail set-up can be completely removed or re-installed in just a couple of minutes.
The cover material and hardware has a good warranty, but have not needed it. A few years ago we had 2 feet of heavy, wet snow while I was out of town for a week, and the cover held up just fine.
The only thing that I don't like is, since it is flat, sometimes rainwater will pool up on it a bit. I have seen a similar soft roll-up cover that has bows that are arched up a little that would prevent that from happening, but I have no idea what brand it was.
All in all, I am very happy with my Truxedo cover, a fair price for a good product.

Ditto on the Retrax Pro - We can close over the Reese 20K without removing handle. Great look and strong.

I have the BAK flip cover. With the locking tail gate you would have to work pretty hard and make some noise to get into the bed after it is closed.

I like my Truxedo Lo-Pro, too. Solid and easy install. Closes tight and releases w/one button. Well made and good price?!

We have the Extang Trifecta -- super secure (you would pretty much have to cut the tonneau to get in if the tailgate is locked) and easy to deal with -- Randy sticks it in the basement while we are towing and puts it on when we reach our destination. We love it!

Looks nice! Only drawback that I can see is you lose a small bit of room in the front part of the truck bed.
