Tire confusion
There is so much discussion about tire issues, especially with the Marathon tire, that my head is beginning to spin. I have Marathons on my 2010 3150RL and want to replace them. BUT, except for the G614s, which are pretty pricy, I can't find any tire in the exact size with a load rating higher than about 3042# rating. I have found a nice tire with a 3415# rating but it requires a 7" wide wheel. I believe my wheels are 6". The overall diameter is the same. My question is: Can this tire be safely mounted on a 6" wide wheel, or am I inviting major trouble?

I replaced ours with Maxxis tires from Discount Tire. They are a trailer tire so they have the higher weight rating. All four, mounted, balanced and out the door were just under $1k. They also have a road hazard warranty - which I hope I never have to use!

What a number of us have done is dumped the ST tires and gone to either USA or Japanese made LTs, size 235/85/16. They will fit and, that 3042# capacity will carry the load. With your GW of 14k and 20% on the pin, that leaves 2800# for each of the four RV tires.

Please look at my signature to see what I replaced our Marabombs with. Good solid tires that support the weight at a lower price point. The main thing is to REPLACE the Marabombs ASAP!

To answer your original question: I wouldn't put a tire designed for a 7" wheel on a 6" rim and espically on a trailer with all the side wall flex during turns and backing into that beautiful but extremely tight spot. I would be worried about rolling the tire right off the rim.

I would not put a wider tire on the rims you have. With the weight they carry it may not handle it. I know in the old days yeah we used to put 60 series tires on factory rims of our "hotrods" lol lol, but they were not carring the kind of weight a 5er has. But you can put an LT tire on your rig and be under all the weight limits even if you totally load up your trailer. LT tires are also more forgiving then ST tires...my opinion only but sure seems that way.

Put the right size tire on, but don't restrict yourself to ST tires, although I have G614's and others Maxxis and both of those are great, many use LT tires and have excellent results. Widen your search, you'll find something that works for you and keeps you safe.

We have been running Firestone TransForce LT E Load tires on our Montanas for years, with no issues. We spent a total of 103 days in our house last year. The ones I put on our current rig were $165 each, and a bit larger than the Marathons but sufficient clearance at the frame.
