Saved my customer $15,000 today
Probably more...
A church I have been taking care of for 30 years or so called me about one of the 20 ton A/C units. The Pastor they had for 2 years is gone suddenly for some reason, he used another HVAC guy. The secretary said this unit has been down all summer. No voltage to the thermostat, I fixed the wiring someone messed up, got power to the thermostat (it is very complex and confusing) then found the whole system completely out of refrigerant. I found the leak: electrical feed-through terminals... not good. Called York...no parts available,
So, I took it all apart and fixed it. Pulled out all the tricks in my musty trick-bag. Pulled a vacuum on it today, as tight as new shoes. I will charge it tomorrow, worked on it all day today.
Pictures and slide show for you gear-heads out there.
Only problem is that I screwed myself out of a $5,000 profit on the job. Most repair guys would have sold them a new system.
Hey.. it's a church...

Ozz,
The way I see it, doing good for the church should get an extra punch on your ticket to Heaven!
Can't hurt!!!

No you didn't Ozz. They are still customers. I always try to get my customers by as cheep as possible, and through the recession we never had a down year. Of course we had a great salesman helping us out, President Obama.

Oz, you’re a good man. You certainly did the right thing. I firmly believe when you do something good for other people especially in a situation like you did, that it will come back to you many times over. Sure do wish you were in our area!

I am not a big believer in that stuff about good things coming back to you, Karma and all, I just want to do a fair job for my customers.

I’ve got to be careful here not to engage in a religious discussion. What I’m saying can be read in Luke 6:38

I would say he had some wisdom about him, he was a physician.

Sure looks to me like the compressor is not a York but a Copeland, maybe thats why York had no parts. Anywho, nice job.

York had it in the unit, had a York part number on the tag, they should carry parts for it... or tell you where to get them.
What they are doing now is staging hermetic compressors in the same size units. Could be any brand, depended on which compressor salesman took the buyer out on the town... Much like any other industry.

Yepper, they started a long time ago putting in permanent air filters and throw away compressors. It's a shame when the manufacturer no longer supports their equipment especially when supplied by another vendor. It seems the whole industry is moving to screws and scrolls. Figured it was in a York unit. York used a good many Copeland compressors, especially in their unitary equipment.

Well, evidently it is better to take than give...or pay.
NOT my fault refrigerant is so expensive...NOT my fault an old 20 ton A/C unit takes a bunch of refrigerant.
The church thinks the bill is too much...so, they will not pay it.
THEY WILL continue to enjoy the nice cool sanctuary, they enjoyed the A/C for the Funeral and for church services on Sundays.
Somewhere in the sermons they must give, it might say something about not paying the bills. I would be happy for them to pay what they THINK might be an acceptable bill, and argue about the rest of it. but nope. No money at all for the poor old retired service guy.
Just wrote out a $250.00 check to an attorney to send them a demand letter and start the process for court.
So much for trying to help a customer.
They did say the A/C unit is operating really good......

Sometimes it amazes me that some of the most unlikely people can act that way.

Wow Ozz, sorry to hear that. What a slap in the face! All the cliches about you doing the right thing just don't help the sting of them stiffing you for the bill - just isn't right. Good luck in court - may you win righteously and also get those legal fees reimbursed!!
