Trailer Life publishes a booklet entitled "Selecting an RV Home Base." This details residency requirements for every state. Take some time and research carefully before making your choice. It may be difficult to convince the tax people that you reside in another state when you own or rent property in their state. Several years ago I took an early pension from a company in Missouri and moved back to Ohio. I was hounded for three years by the Missouri tax department and finally had to send documents to prove that I no longer lived in their state. Also, the state tax laws are constantly changing, as we all know. Currently, you have to live in Ohio for more than six months out of the year to have to pay state income taxes. The law is being changed so that you are required to pay prorated taxes on the actual time that you spend in the state. Sales tax may also be another consideration. There are many instances, particularly mail order or internet purchases or high ticket items, that sales taxes are collected for the state that you claim residency.

As Don says, each state is totally different. Our situation will be that we are in a CG for 6 months or so, not owning any property, in Mich, so that should resolve most issues.

Our 5 grandkids, 3 of our kids, my 2 sisters and their husbands, and my dad and mom all live within 15 miles of each other in NW Lower MI, where we will definitely spend most of May thru Sept (maybe Oct for the color) every year, with occasional forrays to the western US (a daughter in Las Vegas and the National Parks) and Central Canada (a son and his wife).

Cheryl and I are planning a trip to SD to see the Black Hills/Badlands this summer. We will stop in and talk to the Alternative Resources people in Rapid City since we will be there anyway.

We are planning on using Escapees for mail forwarding (that will be a Texas address). The pension is Bob's. Don't know if a house purchased in Iowa could be in Connie's name and we could use daughter's address for residency since we will be at a CG near her - we could license vehicles in Florida as well as driver's licenses (in Fl your voter registration is tied into your license)....... If we sold home in Illinois & bought the one in Iowa we would be close to another daughter & family, Connie's mother, 3 siblings and many, many nieces & nephews - thus making this a really attractive place to be in the Spring/Summer. We would also plan on long vacations in the Tahoe area wher a son works with the US Forest Service.
