Rio Grande Valley

The rio Grande Valley is one of the places we will winter. We sent a information request and got a brochure with 44 Rv parks listed. We are now being deluged with brochures from every one of the Rv parks which is good information but they ALL look good in a brochure. We would place more trust in the evaluation of those who have or are wintering at one on of the parks.. Can we have some feedback on your experiences....

Oh..we are senior folks but in age only.a good shuffleboard court, senior crafts or bingo every night will NOT be selling points.Maybe in another 20 years....

We prefer sites with black top or concrete, while in the Valley.

Other than that, Winter Texans are busy busy people, they love their activities, that is why the campgrounds offer them.

Suggest considering trying one of the more pricy places at first, some we have discussed here on the forum, then look around real hard while you are there the first year. Make your own call.

If you go pricy, and compare that to the RV campground books, and the ratings thereof, for the first year, at least you won't be in a dive and trying to save a few coins. You can stay for a month, even at the pricy places for, ohhhhh, say under $600.00 a month, plus your electricity. The weather is very mild during January and February, you will rarely need to run your A/C, unless you have pups you have to leave in the rig, like (well, ME)

Yep, there are sites that will run you a lot less per month, some are good deals, some are not, just like the rest of life as a RVer.

This is a personal preference item, what suits you, may not suit me!

Luxury (pricy) is hard to take, at least for one time! NOT! HAHA

We got a reservation at Victoria Palms just last week. We are new to the Valley as well so we signed up for that resort based on it's reputation and availability. I would urge you to get your reservation soon as they are all filling up fast. At least one other MOCer will be there. The park is big and has a lot of activities. We're doing exactly what Carol described in her response. We're going to a park that offers everything and then we'll find out what we want for the next year. Be sure to sign up so you can be there before Jan. 11th, the date for the big RV show with Keystone reps in attendance.

Judy,

If the list of activities at Victoria Palms is like what we saw, you are gonna REALLY be surprised. It used to take up a legal sized sheet of paper, FRONT and BACK, and small type too!

Other parks, like Bentsen Palms Village, offer less activities, cause that is what their patrons want.

Some parks have no swimming pool, some people are fine with that.

Personally I would like to take the pool from Victoria and drop it in at Bentsen Palms Village! TEEEEEE HEEEEEEEE.

To each his own! Ain't it great??

Rich & Helen: We have driven thru Victoria Palms and it looks good. Another one you may consider is Tropic Star in Pharr. We know people who have stayed there and it is a nice park. There are many to chose from. Some are part of a big conglomerate such as Tropic Star and have 3 or 4 parks in the area. The best way to chose is go to their website and browse.
Good hunting.

Go to front page of MOC forum, Rio Grande Winter Texans, look for thread on RV show, either the 11th or 12th, thought it was the 12th, Mercedes Live Stock area.

Under MOC Regional Camping Clubs -> Rio Grande Winter Texans -> RGV RV Show there is a discussion about the RGV show with a get-together on January 12th. The nice lady who is not organizing the events in the valley has suggested that we meet on Thursday at noon, I assume at the Montana display at the show. Hope this helps.

Carol, you can come visit us and use the pool.

Judy - Snow to Sun near Weslaco, I have never even driven past this park. However we have reservations for Jan and Feb cause family/friends want to check this place out. For the past two winters we have met in Texas to spend some time together, this year we wanted to go someplace away from the salt and the gulf, so Weslaco was picked, and reservations made. I will get more info on the RV show and try to check it out.

We were in Harlingen, TX in Jan. & Feb. of '04. They had two weather forcasts: Breezy & windy. Breezy = 5 to 15 mph winds; Windy = 15 to 30+. Most were windy. We now go to Shady Acres RV in Ft. Myers, FL.

Weslaco is only 3+ miles from Victoria Palms where we hope to be in Jan and Feb. Great, more Montanas in the neighborhood.

Fort Myers is also a great place, Bob. Hope you have a wonderful stay.

I know what you're saying, Bob. I lived in Liberal, KS for 3 years (OK Panhandle region). We had 3 types of weather. Nice day (Winds 10 to 20 mph), Breezy (20+ mph), and tornadoes. Really do like calmer winds myself.

*On Edit~ I did do a seasonal weather search of the Rio Grande Valley area and the average winds did get my atttention. In Jan/Feb, the average wind speed was 11 to 13 mph. Compared to other regions of the country, that's high average.

Yep, it can be windy, that has been said here a time or two before. Most days it is tolerable, then they get a spell when it really kicks up, for about 36 hours it really pumps!

WHEN there is NO wind, the bugs will make themselves known.

It is part of the thrill, specially trying to Barbeque! That brings on a new challenge and tests your skills! HAHA

That said, it ain't snow and blizzards.

We love being Winter Texans!!!!!!!!!!

jrgwdenner..Flordia was first on our list for a place to snowbird a few years ago but now it has become last because of the over crowding and the increased cost.We will have to compare cost RGV VS Fla.

Rich, those facts are the real reason we decided to go ahead and get our reservations for RGV. I've heard that the prices in Florida have increased a good bit which will be driving Snowbirds to Texas. We had originally planned to just drive to Texas without making a reservation since we weren't familiar with the area but decided against it.

Judy..Helen and I are about the same as you.We will try the RGV the winter of 06/07.We have three places on our "to try list"
RGV, we have several friends from our local camper group that winter in that area..The winds are a negative factor we spent a lot of time in Oklahoma city and we know winds. Lake Havasu, AZ area.Helen has a brother that lives there. It is a bit out of the way but a nice area...and Fla.we have many Friends and family there but again fla has become very expensive and many of our snowbird friends are switching to Tx and AZ,,,,we shall see???

Yes, we know about winds, too, even in Texas as we've lived there at different times. Winds of 11-13 mph don't seem like a deciding factor to us, but to each his own. The lack of bugs is appealing though. And the flea markets, too.
