Insurance II

What an awesome forum this is! My insurance question is this: We are full time RVrs. For the past year we've had both vehicle and RV insurance through AAA (Progressive) through our "residence" in Sioux Falls SD which is about one half the cost of Michigan or Florida. But...they do not offer the umbrella insurance (for increased liability coverage, for example, up to $1million), since we no longer own a home/personal residence. Has any of our MOC friends addressed and solved this dilemna?

Copied from an earlier post.....

As full timers our Montana is insured with Mendota Insurance
According to our Allstate agent which the TV is insured by they DO NOT carry Full Timers insurance.
Your basic RV insurance does not cover liability in the rig such as a guest tripping as he goes out the door. That was aways covered by your homeowners which, as a true full timer, you no longer have home owners insurance. This is part of what Full Time RV Insurance is about.
As rates vary for many different reasons, from the state of residence to each individuals needs to the price you paid for the rig, I am not even going to discuss our premium. I would suggest contacting as many as you can and get quotes.

Here are the ones we got quotes from....

Mendota Insurance

Gilbert RV Insurance

Explorer RV Insurance

Foremost Insurance

Progressive RV Insurance

As the above companies pretty much specialize in RV insurance they do understand a full timer from a part time or a weekender and will be happy to answer your questions. Like buying your Monty, buying RV insurance, especially full timers, requires a ton of research.

We switched to Explorer RV insurance agency. They got us a really good quote. We've been with them 2 years now. They also provide disappearing deductible.

When we became residence of Sioux Falls we went next door to the Dougherty Insurance Agency and got fulltime coverage on our Montana wth National Interstate. We also insured our truck with the same company. Yes the did offer the umbrella package. If I remember correctly it was about $100 extra. We think it is a good package and has a declining deductable. Hope we never have to use it. If you are using Alternative Resources for your mail service they will give you all the info. you need. We were offered several plans but this one fit our needs best.

Same as Adelmoll. Same agency, same coverage. Ours was listed as 'fulltimers insurance' in addition to the usual vehicle coverage. Fulltimers insurance is liability coverage, similar to renters liability coverage.

Bill & Helen,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Thnaks for the input. We too decided to purchase the National Interstate Insurance with Dougherty, which included the declining deductible and the Umbrella Policy. All said and done, we got what we wanted and still saved about $400 per year. Also, they were great to work with. We insured both the PV and Monty. At first this was a hard decision for us since we had been with AAA for over 30 years, but in the end it was a "no-brainer". Thanks again for your response.
