Expanding Under Bed Storage?

Have any of you expanded the under the bed storage area to take advantage of the wasted space? I am just in the initial stages of getting this done. It has been on the "Honey Do" list for some time.

You just need to protect the electric lines running there and also the piston if you have a hydraulic slide.

We have the cable slide on the bedroom and it already has the extra storage space at the head of the bed but I have also seen some that have modified their under-bed storage by putting in sliding trays in the storage at the foot of the bed. If you have the hydraulic slide in the bedroom slide you can also modify it but have to protect the ram like DQDick has stated.

Just completed changes to our unit. We gained a considerable amount of space. Well worth the effort.

Scott-- If we take the mattress off the bed we have two storage areas under it. One is at the head of the bed and the other at the foot. The access doors are on a piano hinged section and the front is about a foot and a half or two foot from the wall and the foot section takes up the rest of the space of the bedframe. We put the sleeping bags for the grandkids and some extra blankets up front under the head section and other "stuff" in the foot section. We don't put anything heavy in either section because it is a cable slide and we really don't know how much pressure the cables will handle when putting out or retracting the slide. Some have had problems with their cables so we don't want to take any chances.

Rondo: Checked our bed platform and no extra storage under the head end. Just the regular storage under the lower half.

Everytime we raised the plywood under the mattress to gain access to the storage space the blankets would always come out from under the mattress. The reason was because the hinge for the plywood was about 2 1/2 to 3' from the head end wall. Upon investigation, I found a void space under there so why didn't they build the frame so it could be used. I removed the entire top and replaced it with a new piece of plywood. Because the mattress was about 5 feet wide, I had to widen the top by doing it with a lap joint with glue and wood screws. Not we have so much more storage space. We put blankets and extra pillows in there because it is hard to get to.
