Busiest railroad in the nation?

The train traffic here HAS TO BE the busiest in the nation. All day. All night. Horn blaring at 3:30am. The tracks are only about 100 feet from our site in the 300 row.

Looking forward to Saturday when we can leave.

We will probably sleep all day Sunday.

Yes, we have the fan on in the bedroom, with fan apps on two cell phones next to the bed. Sleep aid pills. Ear plugs.

Feels like the washer is in spin cycle all night

I'm not at the rally but we've camped there a few times over the last 35 years and yes that is one very busy railroad. But it is not the worst. The trains just come through all hours of the night when trying to sleep which makes it seem like it's the worst.

They blow their horns right there at the campground because there is a signal there for them to do that as they are approaching a road intersection just beyond the campground (East Monroe street).

We live close to Norfolk Southern 3 main lines. They carry up to 40,000,000 million pounds of coal per train not counting up to 60,000 pounds per car for 200 cars and three locomotives in front and two in the center of the train. They are close to two miles long.
Thankfully there is a forest between us and almost a half a mile.

LOL I grew up living by those tracks and yes they are busy but I guess we got use to it, but I do have to say the busiest tracks I know of are in Lingle Wy. It’s a switch yard and they haul coal day and night. We stayed at the CG right across the road and wow, no rest for the weary.

Jay - I feel your pain. The last time we decided to move to another homestead several hours closer to my elderly mother, we had 3 mandated prerequisites: NO train tracks, NO hog farms and NO chicken farms withing 3 miles of any land were would be purchasing. That worked out really well for us. Unfortunately I didn't grow up around trees and the associated logging. Paper mill 15 miles away can be an irritant as well when the wind is in the wrong direction. Live and learn on our part. Hope you get some good rest Sunday.

My nephew lives about a hundred yards from the railroad. It’s on a steep grade. When a train goes up it will rattle the dishes in the cabinet. If the engineer doesn’t throttle back when he reaches the top he will pull the draw heads into. That takes some power. Until they started putting engines in the center of the train he would be pulling with 4 or 5, 5 or 6 thousand HP engines.

At one time Roanoke Va made some of the largest steam engines ever made. Our 611 engine weighs almost a million pounds when fully loaded and is capable of running over a hundred MPG.

In defense of the locomotive engineers, it is federal law that the horns sound at EVERY intersection. 2 Long blasts, a short blast, and a then a final long one. If there are 2 intersections close, you get the show twice, or even 3 times if needed.
Most locomotives have a night muffle on them and if the engineer is thoughtful, the longs won't be long, and the shorts are very short!
I am not sticking up for the way they sound, but my career was 32 years of the railroad industry, and this is how they work. Hope your sleep comes easy when you arrive back home!

While camping - KOA Elkhart and one somewhere in Kansas (also had a feedlot nearby) were possibly our worst adventures. The closest near where we live now is about a mile and seldom any noise

It wasn’t quite so bad in the 400 section.
