DURAMAX

I just got back from a GM school on the new DURAMAX Engine. One thing that came out that no one knew about was changing the rear end fluid after the first 500 miles!!!! We had two guys there with DURAMAXs with over 25,000 miles and had never been changed.

Apparently, the factory the makes the rear end gears doesn't finish and polish the gears before they are installed. So GM puts some abrasive fluid in the rear end to help polish and finish the gears. After 500 miles they figure it needs to be replaced with standard fluid.

Also, these things are very picky about air in the fuel system. They strongly recomend not filling the fuel tank while the engine is running... The incoming fuel causes are bubbles in the tank, which will then work their way to the injectors causing the engine to run rough.

Also, there is a big differance between the fuel tank cap (gas cap) used on the diesels and the gas engines. If you ever need a new fuel tank cap, make sure you get the diesel one (the diesel has a vacuum and a pressure valve, where as the gas only has pressure).

Another thing is that the fuel system uses a fuel cooler before returning the fuel to the tank. This cooler is located under the pickup bed, in front of the fuel tank. This cooler is prone to getting dirty and clogging up. If you hear your fuel tank "burping" or venting pressure look at that cooler and clean it up. They said typically this happens when the cooler is dirty and there is less than 1/3 tank of fuel.

The finial bit of information to share is that the computer knows the level of fuel in the fuel tank... If you have less than say 1/4 tank and start going up an incline the computer will reduce power to the engine thinking that you have less fuel, and to try and aid in getting to a filling station.... The point of this one is to make sure you have a full tank of fuel before going up any steep inclines!!!!

Oh ya... if you change your own fuel filter, and get them from the dealer there are two different part numbers for the fuel filter. One has the water in fuel sensor, and the other doesn't. There is about $60 differance between the two. You can get the new filter without the sensor, and unscrew the sensor from your old filter and screw it into the new filter.....

Thought I would share with all you DURAMAX owners!!!!!
