2017 Ford vehicle problem

Our daughter has a 2017 F150 which she uses to tow a light fifth wheel. She recently noticed some issues on start-up and took it to her trusted service place. She is meticulous about vehicle maintenance.

To her dismay, they told her there was a timing issue, and she needed a new timing chain (I'm unsure of all the exact details). The bill would be over $2,000 (CDN). She then took it to the nearest Ford dealership, as she felt this would likely be under warranty, which it was, but only because her mileage was under the warranty amount. Her service centre told her that they had seen several other Ford vehicles with the same problem, and some were not so lucky, as they were out of warranty.

The Ford dealership is going to fix it, but now they have to wait for parts. Apparently this is a problem affecting all 2017 Ford vehicles, not just trucks, and was caused by not setting the timing properly at the factory. This is probably why the parts are on back order, as there is a sudden demand for them.

If I were a Ford owner having to fork over a large sum due to an inherent problem caused by the manufacturer, I think I would talking to a lawyer. My reason for posting this to make 2017 Ford owners aware of this issue. Perhaps if your vehicle is still under warranty, and you have not had a problem, it might be wise to have it looked at before the warranty runs out and you might get a big bill when this happens. Notice I didn't say "if".

On a side note, we have an inherent problem with our 2003 Toyota Corolla which came up in 2014. The odometer was programmed to stop at 299,999. Toyota offered to pay half the $400 repair cost, but we declined. It ended up in our favour when a tire flew off a pickup truck last year on the road and damaged our door. The low mileage made our car worth more than it would be if it showed the actual mileage.

Not all are affected as the diesels don't have chains. Their camshafts are gear driven.

This sounds like the 3.5 Ecoboost. I know they have had some trouble with the timing or something related to that. Think about this a 3.5 putting out 450 HP and 510 TK. 3.5 that is about 212 cubic inches. I remember when 427s were putting out 425 HP.
I know a guy that had a 70s Chevy that he put over 700,000 miles on the original 350 engine. He put another 350 in it. When he parked it it had 1,000,070 miles on it. He planed to restore it and got cancer and sold it within the last year.

Who made the claim that the problem stems from improper timing at the factory and do you have it in writing? That should be one of the first questions asked by any good lawyer if there is such a thing.

The service person at the Ford dealership. No, she does not have it in writing.
