I just got a message saying water in fuel on my 2013 Ram. I was about 8 miles from home and the light went off after about 3 miles. I have about 80% left on the fuel filters so i will drain the filter and water separator tomorrow and then pour the fuel out of each one into a glass jar and check for water. I didn't lose any power and i don't think there is any damage but i will call my dealer [which does have a mechanic] Monday to see what they say.

Both filters have a drain valve. I would crack them for a few seconds each and see what comes out. If the water in fuel light stays off, no big deal. If it comes back, flushing the tank may be in order.

I drained each filter today into a glass jar and found no water in fuel. I put a drop of water in the jar and it quickly separated from the diesel and went to the bottom. It seems i got a false reading because if there were any water anywhere it would show up in the filters first. I'll keep driving it like it is as it runs fine. I just turned over 100,000 miles and never saw this before. When the light came on it had just started raining and i wonder if there is a sensor somewhere that got wet and sent the warning.

Sounds like you may have dodged a bullet. The WIF sensor is just a float switch at the bottom of the filter, and could give a check engine signal for reasons other than water in the fuel. I’ve had my CEL give me a “water in fuel” message momentarily and then go off. Kind of like a “low coolant level” message after going over a speed bump.😄

Thanks for the reply. I did some research on the Cummin's forum and they also talked about the wif sensor when getting wet will cause the wif light to come on. As i stated earlier the light came on just after driving in some rain. I have the wrench to remove this sensor as i always have to when changing the filter so i will order this sensor. Thanks for the imput.

The sensor can't get wet from the outside. It resides inside the filter. You should be able to drive through a deep creek and not affect the sensor.

Im not even a mechanic... Tell the dealer to drop the tank and clean it.. Blow out the fuel lines, change the filters. Button it up and start it... It's not that hard..
