Be sure you get an Amateur radio license first. Get into UHF/VHF as StageCoachDriver,/AE7OX suggested, get a radio, & talk to other ham radio operators as you travel.
It's easy to get an entry level amateur radio license with some study on the internet, and taking an uncomplicated test. Just Google ham radio license study.
Its not too hard to set up your radio in the Monty if you want, or in your tow vehicle.. Its an inexpensive hobby too.
