Honda Ridgeline towing 28ft trailer!

Met guy at the gas station today. Newer 2014 Honda Ridgeline and a New 2015 28ft Rockwood ultra light travel trailer. Now just to be fair, the Honda was equipped with the "Chrome Package"! Just kept saying to myself, don't say anything! Wife leaned over to speak to me out truck window, "Michael don't say anything"! Watching the diesel filling my tank, thinking please God just let this go!!!! Then it happened...he looks over and says "Why you need big truck like that"!

I was nice (I swear I was nice) and over the next three mins he heard my concerns over 7900 + lb trailers (I am being kind) being towed by a vehicle with 5000 lb max towing capacity. Further the fact that the Honda was full of camping gear, bikes, Two Honda generators and his large butt.

He told me the RV place said it would work, then he told me he was on his way to Portland. I just simply stated, your so grossly overweight your putting everyone around you in danger. He asked me what to do. I said Ford dealer a mile that way, a GM dealer 1/2 mile the other way, on the street we were on. Take your pick, I said please go buy a real truck. I even offered to personally introduce him to both dealers, owners of which I know.

He reluctantly thanked me and drove off to North Bound I 5 on ramp to Portland. So Sue tells me, well Mikey..your the weight police!!! Lol.

Folks like that may well mandate laws to force the rest of us to go thru weigh stations sometime in the future.

I have said for years that the RV community is only one horrific deadly accident away from more regulation. It could be in the form of weight restrictions or it could be in the form of special driver's license endorsements. It only takes one crash to be nationally televised and then one politician to have a knee-jerk reaction and pass the first law. After that more states will follow.

Had a Tundra towing a cougar lite 5th wheel in the park. Looked up his model, hitch around 1400, trailer fully loaded spec was 10k. Did what Artie didn't and zipped it for once. Now we are in Colorado, he was from Florida. I figured his xmsn or rear end would give out before he hurt someone.

The sad part is that a lot of the RV dealerships continue to tell folks "you will be fine with that truck to tow this thing". I understand they are in the business of making money, but I don't know how some of them sleep at night. I wonder how many folks have gone after their dealership after something untold happens and they find out they were not supposed to be doing what they were doing. I know there should also be some "blame" on the truck/RV owner as well, but I believe a lot of them feel that the RV dealership folks are "experts" and know what they are talking about. -Glenn

Don't forget, that many of those Dealers that tell you "You'll be fine", then have you sign a release form that you understand the weight limits of your TV and the RV you're purchasing. Makes it hard to go back on them when you signed that you understood.

Many of those sales persons have no idea what a customer should have. If a Tundra can town a space shuttle, why not a Mobile Suites?

The new owner is out of his mind if he doesn't learn a little about what he's getting himself into ahead of time. Stupid is as stupid does, I guess. Whatever that means. Sounds good though.

As a truck driver for over 40 years i have seen it all. I have seen people killed because of something stupid that they wanted to do and they though that they were safe doing it and now they are no longer here. He will get into a push me pull situation and then he will be wishing that he hd a real truck. Seen it a lot. and as said you can't fix stupid.....

He said it, I second it. My little 3150RL with a listed pin weight of 2,200lbs is actually 3,200lbs with the second A/C, W/D in the front closet, DW clothes, my guns and ammo. So Yes, there is a reason my little trailer is towed with a 3500 DRW.

Jim

PS. I am adding air bags this week to help in the squat.

Was on I-40 coming to East Tennessee from Myrtle Beach last Saturday and an old fellow passed me 2 or 3 times in a Tundra with a 5.7 towing way too large of a Cougar 5th wheel. The truck was squatted to the Max in the rear. Just an accident waiting for a place to happen. The old fellow must have been 83 or so.

Read the bio's of some of our fellow MOCers...nearly as bad as the Ridgeline. But, "it pulls fine" and "never had a problem."
