randye is quite correct.

Before the “crimp” system was developed to be dependable the Non Skive system was the standard. It wasn’t a temporary repair but was used in the assembly of hydraulic hoses from the original equipment manufacturer down to the field repair.

Assembly of these fittings without using a mandrel is difficult and the likely hood of cutting the inner liner of the hose is high. Mandrels are not expensive and can be purchase one at a time to fit the hose fitting you intend to install and can be used over and over.

The reason for the change from Non Skive is the cost of assembly. It takes a technician about 2 min each fitting to trim the hose correctly install the fitting and crimp it and there are fewer events of fitting leaks on a new hose with the crimp type.
