8960 Miles!!
We arrive home in Wisconsin this afternoon after 8960 miles to Alaska and back. What an adventure. The wife and I saw some amazing sites, meet some great people and made it safely home. Honestly, it is a tough drive, much construction, very bad roads in the Yukon.
Paid a high of $8.00 for a gallon of diesel at Pink Mountain, thank you Canada very much.
I can't belie how well the Montana held up over the torture track they call the Alcan.
Very nice to be home!

Glad you had a safe trip and enjoyed seeing our fine state. You are correct that road construction is very intense.

Even though Alaska is not on my bucket list, I'm happy for you that you got to see the sights.
Welcome back to the lower 48!!

Did you have to do a lot of boondocking or were there enough campgrounds spaced out to get to??

Tom and I had a wonderful trip to Alaska a few years ago, and we are thinking of going back in 2014. How was the weather for you? When we traveled, we were in Alaska in the month of July and had many rainy days. We heard from locals that August is the best month to be in the state and are thinking of incorporating that into next years trip. What a beautiful state, but I concur on the Alcan Highway, it is a rough road, but part of the adventure.

Our weather was dry and on the cool side. Just about zero rain, actually it was extremely dry. Going up we saw very very few RV's. Campgrounds were empty. Toad River opened just 4 days before our arrival. Construction was minimal. After our 6 weeks in Alaska, everything changed. This would have been around the Middle of July, CG full RV's everywhere and lots of road construction.
This trip with the wife was an amazing adventure, the scenery was unbelievable, abundant wildlife, met many fine people. We got our first taste of Alaska about 3 years ago with an inside passage cruise. So this trip we didn't repeat anything that we saw or places we visited.
After I said all this, would I drive it again, no. It is an extremely challenging trip. The roads especially in the Yukon are terrible to the point of being dangerous in some spots.
Very hard on the equipment. The G16's on the Monty were great, minimal wear. But I probably wore half the life out of my new truck tires. What they call chip seal is very rough on the tires. The smoother roads tended to be the ones that are not paved. The frost heaves played hell towing EVEN at slow speeds.
We are glad we did it, many memories for years to come, but as the bumper sticker stated "We DROVE THE ALASKA HIGHWAY AND SURVIVED."
