G614 Tires
Are these the G614's we need to replace the "Marabombs" with?
We received a flyer from CW on G614 RST's for $349 each. Is this high / fair ?
Our 2011 3400RL is setting about a mile and a half from CW here in Chichester, New Hampshire on a seasonal and after 2 years of it setting on the seasonal, the S&B is finally under contract and we are going to be venturing out this year on some road trips and don't want to even take the chance with the Marathons even though they have less than 100 miles on them. CW would be convenient to get them swapped out.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. MOC is always my electronic dictionary on Montana's thanks to you guys and gals

Those are the correct tires, and that is a fair price. And they are GREAT tires, IMHO.

Just make sure the rims are rated for 110 lbs of air pressure. If not they need to be replaced.

The installed price of $389 is a fair price. Don't forget the spare! Depending on wher eyou go you may get it a few buck cheaper but not much.

Does anyone see a problem with using a same size tire that is $250 cheaper as a spare? It just doesn't make sense to me to put a $350 tire in a spare position to sit and rot.

I would check the manufacture date on the spare tire, it is located at the end of the DOT string and will be 4 numbers, the first two are the month, the second are the year. ie: 2410 would mean the tire was made in the 24th month of 2010.
I would also read these forums with respect to the G614, some have not been happy with them either and there are alternatives.
If your Marathons are only 2 years old, have the tire shop remove the spare and check it over.
I am with pineranch on the spare, there is no way I would put a $350.00 tire on as a spare. Your choice of course.

As a person with a G614 as a spare let me throw in my thoughts on why I did it. We sometimes travel on Sunday and we frequently travel in unpopulated areas. If I run over something (sometime this year someone ran their 614 over a pair of scissors in the road) I don't want to have to either run the rig 300 miles or more on a Marathon till I get to the next place I can get a G614 or find a place to park and wait till a local shop can get one in. For me, that good spare is just another kind of insurance.

Hmmm, is it just me, or did anyone else miss the last 12 months of 2010? I only remember the first 12. I have Discount Tire's rendition of the super RV trailer tires, load range E. I have had them every since Discount came out with them, now on the Monty and also on the previous trailer, and have not had a problem with them. The Monty had the original tires on it when we bought it so we put new tires on in Georgia on the way home from Florida last spring, and they were $985.00 installed, for all 4, with one hundred rebate, much lower than the suggested 389 each price above for the G614's. I don't understand the actual value of the much more expensive tires. I do realize sometimes you get what you pay for, but in this case where I have had absolutely no problem with the Discount Tire Goodyear's I don't see the difference in prices.

Date of Manufacture is a GUIDE. There's nothing wrong with a tire made (for instance) a few years ago that has been sitting in a warehouse out of the sun and weather and that has not be used but in every respect but D of M is a "new" tire.

I think many assumed I was talking about the Marathon as my spare. NO WAY!!! Bought a BF Goodrich commercial TA for $135 installed.

In US years only have 12 months. LOL Sorry Ed couldn't resist. Also the four digit born date of tire is first two is week and second two digits is the year.

Perhaps you missed the posts many of us recorded on the issues we have had with the Marathons (think those are the "Discount Tire Goodyear's" you are referring to....). I was among those not seeing any issues with the Marathons until my Marathons started to go bad. The value I see with the more expensive tires is that they seem to be holding up better than the cheaper Marathons, and, therefore, might just be safer. Time will tell for me. In the meantime, hope your tires serve you well.

thanks to all for the replies. I know they are expensive but I shudder at the thought of some of these 2500 damages that I have seen the pictures on here of. always nice to be proactive.

If you go with the G614s, make sure they install High Pressure metal valve stems. You need the metal valve stems with the higher pressure of the 614s

Yup Mike you're right, that's exactly what I thought. Using a BF Goodrich as a spare makes sense. Sorry!

Ha ha thank you for reminding me of my error. I am finding as I get older I try to extend the year as long as possible, also there are times when my fingers go faster than my brain, on a really cold day getting the brain to work at all is often a challenge. Of course it should have read "week".
Actually tires do have a shelf life, there is no way I would buy a tire that was not made at least in the year I was purchasing it.
If you decide to replace all of them Alan, your only concern is the capacity of the rims.

DQDick: I agree with you completely on the using a G614 as a spare. I replaced all 5 of my Marathons with the G614 for the security.

Alan,
I would check for prices at Sam's on Rt 106, the Goodyear store on South Main Street.
Also check the Belknap Tire on Route 3 in Belmont, I got mine there about 4 years ago and have not had one problem with them.
Good Luck
E. Sven
