Travelin' with Critters

Okay--the dog has gone where all good dogs go when their time runs out. But we still have 2 cats with us which we inherited (long story will not bore you--but they are nice critters). Have always left them at home on weekend trips--they are inside animals and taking them to the kennel was more trouble than it was worth. But we are now thinking about some long trips and have just found out that the cost of kenneling 2 cats is $25 a day!! Really kills our budget. No neighbors or family available to cat-sit and we are out in the country so no pet sitters either. All of which is to say--does anybody have any words of wisdom about travelling with cats? We have absolutely no clue. Would appreciate all suggestions (and no, getting rid of them is not an option!) Thanks in advance.

Survived weekend with the cats though HC was truly a pain in the neck with all the moaning and groaning yowling and howling. Spent most of the weekend under the couch swearing at us! LBD was just a champ and we guess that he will be a campin' cat. Still working on basement access for litter box. We'll be out again with both of them to give HC another chance. We'll keep you posted. Thanks again for all the encouragement.
