A few years ago prior to purchasing an overhead camper I asked a California Highway Patrolman specifically about being over on the gross vehicle weight rating if I was involved in an accident. He said the GVWR wasn't a concern as long as the tires were rated for the load. Underated tires gets a ticket every time. Insurance may be another matter entirely!

Update:
I spoke to my dealer today and they agreed with the previous post regarding the ability of the 2500HD to pull this rig. The big concern is the rear axel weight (GAWR-R) and combined weight (GCWR) . I will definitely be under both of these number. I think we'll keep it.

Long term fix- Get a one ton dually (a one ton isn't enough) next time.

Good discussion though!

Thanks for everyone's input.

Okay we have not been to the scales yet but have to do so. Has anyone with a 3475 and at least a 2500 HD Chevy 8.1 actually been to the scales to have everything weighed? Id be interested in what the actual scale weights are? thanks

The 3/4 ton trucks WILL pull the Montanas. However, they are being stressed when you get to the bigger Montanas (32 ft and up). My F-250 with the Banks Power Pack walks right along with my 36 ft Montana. Yet I know I should have a bigger truck. My tranny has had its problems. The PowerStroke w/Banks generates a lot of torque and the older Ford trannys weren't built for this. The Allison tranny is probably the best.

Not that anyone may care anymore, but we decided to go ahead and keep the Montana 3475RL on order. I spoke to Montana, Chevrolet and my Montana dealer and there are some ways to reduce pin weight. Everyone agrees we're ok. So.. Deep breath and take the plunge! Back on course with the original plan.

Thanks

Orv, I take exception to your statement about the 3/4 tons being stressed with the longer model Montanas.

1) It is in fact the smaller Montanas that have the higher pin weights so there is actually less stress with the longer ones

2) Towing wise, the 3/4 and 1 tons both have the same engine so no difference in towing power. As a matter of fact the 3/4 tons typically can legally tow more since both trucks typically have the same GCWR and the 3/4 ton weighs less.

And another thought to consider, previous to our 3400RL, we towed a 98 Cardinal 30' with 2 slides. Although the 3400 is almost 2000# heavier, I am fully convenced there is little or no significant difference in acceleration performance. At highway speeds, the TV actually performs better with the heavier 3400 than the Cardinal as I get approximately 2 more MPG. I believe this is because of the more aerodynamically shaped front cap of the Montana.

Size and lenght do not always tell the tale. And I'm talking trailers!
