Jimmy, you just might have done that(jinked yourself-- but I hope not)! Never say never! I know of numerous individual that have said they don't need a Bedsaver because they check everything two and three times or that their hitch is fool proof and can't come unhitched. Well there is not a hitch that is fool proof and every lasting! I've seen numerous hitchings that the pins came out of the hitch for one reason or another and in most cases it has been because it was "high hitched" or the locking pin was not totally locked or engaged. In each case the person said they checked and rechecked their hitch before taking off. I've got it(the Bedsaver) so that IF I DO MAKE A MISTAKE ON MY HOOKING UP I will not have a bent tailgate or side rails and the landing gear on the Monte will not take any abuse either IF the unit should slide back beyond the length of the truck bed-- which it can't with the Bedsaver. IF the Bedsaver is properly installed it will catch the pin with less than a two inch fall from the hitch itself and the distance from the hitch or capturing mechanism is only about four or five inches back also.
The Butch Bedsaver is a bar that hold the pin in place with only an inch or so out of the hitch capture mechanism. What I don't like about it is that you really can't tell if you come unhitched because there is so little of a distance that the pin moves AND thus you do not have the "clunk" of the unit falling into the caught mode or mechanism. You could drive away and not even know you have come out of the hitch because the "bar" has caught the pin in such a short distance.
This is just my side of the whole idea and I'm not perfect so I can't say never and that it will never happen to me but if it does I'm prepared and it won't cost me $3-6000 or possibly even more if damage is done to the Monte also, to get my mistake repaired. If you drop into the Blue Ox Bedsaver hard it will bend it or stress it and you may need a new one or a new catch mechanism but it won't cost you the price of the original- at least it didn't on the one I know that had to be replaced. Just an overall good insurance in my eyes!
