6.0 Powerstroke

Go to the rvdreams.com site and read the blog for June 15th and 16th to read their dilema with the 6.0 Powerstroke.
It's hard to believe a motor can cost this much, however i spent twenty-three hundred last fall for an oil cooler. My truck is a 2006 with 44,000 miles that i had planned on using for a long time, but now i not sure what i'm going to do. I did everything Ford recommended for trouble free driving, but still had problems. Tom.

Here is what I offered as a comment to Howard:

It is very unlikely the engine over-revved as the computer will automatically up-shift the transmission at red line in order to save the engine. Sounds like total B.S. from the Ford mechanic. The tow-haul function works most effectively at 3,000 RPM and up. More likely you had an injector stick open, hydraulic lock a cylinder, and things went downhill quickly. It is a common problem with the 6.0L. But you won't know for sure until someone takes it apart.

It doesn't matter which brand you have, the new diesels are too sophisticated and too expensive to repair to *NOT* have a warranty in place.

Do your self a favor, if you buy another truck, do *NOT* buy a 6.0L Ford. There are just too many failures with that engine. I had three engine failures before Ford replaced it with the newer 6.4L truck.

I can not stress strongly enough the need for an extended warranty if you have a 6.0L Ford engine!!!

our new at the time 2004 came with a 100,000 factory powertrain warranty. we did the research before buying ours and knew service intervals on oil changes saves the egr valve & cooler and a coolant filtration system was needed for long engine life. So far we're at 80k miles mainly towing without any out of pocket repairs other than required maintenance which fortunetly I can do myself. I know many folks around here who could tell similar stories with their ford 6.0 tow vehicles. Not all 6.0's have the bad reputation the internet promotes on these forums. Good luck.

The 6.0 has no doubt had more than its share of problems. And has gained a reputation that all 6.0s are totally unreliable. But I suspect the actual percentage of those with problems is relatively small compared to the number on the road. More than most, but still probably a relatively small percentage.
I have had two. First was an '04 F250 6.0. Had an EGR valve go bad at about 35,000, replaced under warranty. No other problems at all.
Traded it at 46,000 for the current '07 F350 6.0. Had a cam sensor go bad at about 55,000, replaced under warranty. Otherwise trouble free with 76,000 on it. About 18,000 towing.
Bought an extended warranty for both but have not had to use it.
Having said that, I would still steer someone away from an early model 6.0. Not so much so for a late model 6.0.

As you can see in my signature I have quite a few miles on our 6.0. I purchased it with a little over 300K miles on it and I’ve put well over 50K on it since I bought it. I was told that I better take out a loan for 20 to 30 thousand dollars if I purchased this truck by the mechanics that usually worked on my vehicles. Well after not taking their advice and going ahead with the purchase I’m not sorry I bought it.

I have had some problems. When we first bought it I had to have the cooler changed. I’ve changed a few of the injectors but not all of them. I also had to have the wiring harness changed. 1-2 glow plugs I’ve changed at least 2 cam sensors. The turbo hose has popped off twice. It may sound like a lot but for more than a year it has been running perfect. I have no complaints. I have regular maintenance done on it and I use a Ford dealership garage. I believe it has paid off over all. When I have problems that’s where it goes.

With what I paid for the truck and spent in maintenance I only feel that I’ve been out a little inconvenience for the down time. I would not be afraid to take out on a long trip, new ones can break down.

I was also told by a diesel truck mechanic that the 6.0 is a good engine made by International and that they have a bad rep. With everything I hear about them overall I probably would stay away from buying another one but for now this one is doing just fine.

I have a 2002 with the 7.3 in it. Replaced a cam sensor and a alternator. 166,000 miles. The mech. that works on my diesel trucks said when I asked him about the best new trucks that if I did get a new truck he wanted my 7.3 or any other 7.3 that people wanted to sell. He said I would be better off spending $15,000 on my 7.3 than getting a new truck.

I was advised by both the service manager and one of the top salesman at Yucca Valley Ford in Yucca Valley, CA to never get rid of my 1995 7.3L Powerstroke driven truck. So that's what we are doing. It's presently in the Ford garage at Spencer, IA having the hood and top of the cab repainted. Getting it to look like new again.

Had a conversation with a Diesel mechanic while we were both looking at Class A and C Motor Homes at an RV dealership last week

His opinion of the new diesels were not good

We do have the 08 6.4L.All maint is done by Ford at the required intervals. We do have the Ford ESP . 50K miles of mostly towing and not a single problem.
we do not have first hand knowledge of any of our camping friends having a problem with their 6.0L diesel.
We had the 05 Ford, same truck, V-10. That gasser is a great motor but can not compare with the Diesel and we should not try to compare them.

We put over 100,000 miles on our 6.0 before trading in for our 2011 6.7. Almost all those miles were towing, and our 6.0 ran trouble free for 6 years, never seeing a mechanic except for two computer flashes.
