Surge Guards

For those that are interested, there is a really good article in RV The Magazine from Camping World. The article shows the results of not having a surge guard on a couple of Class A's and also a surge guard that took the full brunt of a heavy charge coming through the shore line box! It is on pages 40-42!

There's also a great article on John Schneider(Bo on the original Dukes of Hazard) and his travels in an RV he owns. To bad it a Class A he owns instead of a Monte but it is a good article.

You can go online at: RVtheMagazine.com to see the articles!

Correction: I just tried the above address and it does not connect you to the magazine. I'll try and find the sight and repost it! Sorry!!!

I read the article last night. I have both a 50 and 30 amp. Learned about them here on the MOC and would not be without one. Just one question I have - after looking at the burned up one, why would you mount one permanently inside the camper?

My thoughts exactly John! I'd rather have a burned up Surge Guard OUTSIDE the unit than have one inside and catch the unit on fire too! I still haven't found that sight for all you others to view the article, still searching!

The only issue I found online was the Feb., 2011 issue. Perhaps the new issue isn't posted yet. I am curious as to whether the "burnt" unit malfunctioned since I would not think normal protection would involve the entire unit being burned??? I hope our hard-wired EMS would not be subject to the same type of failure, but obviously it raises questions. Time for the experts, gurus, and electrical geniuses to chime in. All I can do is offer an opinion, and as of now, it would be an uniformed one. Hopefully there is someone out there who can inform us as to the potential perils, pitfalls, predicaments, and hopefully preventive measures???

We have the Progressive Industries hard wired 50 amp unit. It has removable sacrificial boards in it. If it takes a hit you call PI and they send you a replacement. Ya pull the bad board out and but the good one back in...
