Tire question

We have a 2005 Dodge 3500 Duley and pull a '05 2955RL. It's time to replace the truck tires and am wondering what others are useing and how they like them. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks
Brent & Laraine

Brent and Laraine welcome. On the truck I have the Michelin LTX M/S and these are the second set, great tires.

The Michelins are always a good choice but I've had just as good luck with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A. My 2005 Ford came with them and I got 70,000 miles out of them. I swapped them for a new set of the same thing even though they had another 5k to 7k or so miles left on them. So, 75k to 80k miles. I was thrilled when my Dodge came with the same tires. For my money they're just as good as the Michelin, maybe get 5k or 10k fewer miles, but cost considerably less.

I do like the Michelins but the BFG still in my opinion gives me the best bang for the buck. That, however, is just my opinion and there will be many differing opinions. And that doesn't make any of us wrong.

I'm with Steve on the BF Goodrich's. I feel they are just as good as Michelin and considerably less money.

That's what I was afraid of Steve (Riegel) and Jim (Fischer). I have those same BF Goodrich tires on my 2006 Ford F-250, size 265/70R17E and with 57,000 miles on them I am STILL waiting for them to wear out so I can get larger tires (planning on the Michelin) to support the suspension work with the F-350 suspension to increase the GVWR. If some MOC members recall, I needed larger wheels and tires to complete the capability but didn't want to just toss these away. I am tired of waiting so I will be changing the wheels & tires soon.

Brent and JimF, in both cases the 16" and 17" tires are of load range E but you are correct in assuming they may not have the same actual weight rating. On the 265/70R17E tires the load rating is 3195 as a single wheel and 2910 as a dually. Neither of you mentioned the size of tire you need, and if you have larger wheels the numeric ratings will probably be higher (but still load range E) and certainly capable of supporting Brent's Dodge 3500 dually when towing or loaded.

I plan to change to Michelin because my past experience on other vehicles is that they tended to last the longest compared to other brands I used and is probably why they cost more. I like the wear on the BF Goodrich, but they developed those surface cracks on the side walls within the first year of ownership, which in my case are harmless, but certainly cause conversations of concern. I have also seen these cracks on other brands with other vehicles but I have never had these on Michelins especially on the vans, SUVs and trucks where I fluctuate the inflation depending on the load. I think it might be caused by fluctuation, heat (I live in the So. Cal. desert) and that liquid crap that car washes put on the tire. I refer to it as cooking oil that helps deep fry the sidewalls.

Sorry,
In typical newbe fashion, I forgot to tell you all what was already on my truck. It came with General Ameritrac's. They have about 45k on them. The size is;

LT 235/80 R17 load range E.

Thank you all for your continued comments and advice, I can see I came to the right place for help.

I put Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires on my 3500 Dually and love them. They have a very agressive tread pattern, which I need as I live on a dead-end dirt road and need to extra traction to get the Monty up the hill. So far I have about 30K on them and they still look almost new. They may not be the cheapest, but I like the idea of those Kevlor belts. Plus I still spend the winters in snow country and these tires are excellent in snow and ice (not pulling the Monty of course).

Brent: I think you are going to find yourself limited to either the General Ameritrac / Ameritrac TRs , or the Goodyear SR-A or SilentArmour tires. The SilentArmour are new in that size, six or 7 months ago only the SR-As came up as available when I was looking for tires on my 2008. (I traded into a 2010 truck -- one way to get new tires I guess ..)

The SRW Dodge has a much wider tire availability but the dually does not. Now, that said, LonnieB may know if some other size will fit without any problems -- I know we have a lot of room height wise, but the space between the duals is a concern when you go to a different size.

If you don't mind, let us know what you decide.

The Michelins are great, but price is high in my part of the country. I am running my third set of Cooper Discovers ATR and get about 60K per set. They run about $210 each in my part of the world.

My TV is a 2004 Dodge 3500 DRW and I have the same tire size. My truck came with Goodyears and at about 40,000 miles I replaced them with a set of Generals. After another 40 some odd thounds of miles I replaed them with Goodyear all season radials. All have served me well.
