Steve, your 03 F350 had a 9900 GVWR. It weighed 7000 pounds so it had a 2900 pound payload.

Your 05 F250 has a 10000 GVWR. It weighs 8000 pounds so it has a 2000 pound payload.

I read that as the 03 having more beef.

The combined rating is the invisible rating that requires information not easily available.

The GVWR is on the door, it is the rating that law enforcement people check in some places. Take care and enjoy the new unit.

I was a Chevy man once. Three of them left me walking in the desert! One with a spun crank bearing (38,000 miles), one with a busted ring and pinion (4,000 miles), and one with a transmission locked in gear (65,000 miles).

I finally bought a Ford in 2001. THANK GOD it left me walking in the desert this July with a bad transmission (55,000 miles) - I was starting to feel as though I was blessed!

Cmon Toyota - get a hint.

Bsmeaton, I am a big Toyota fan. I helped both my kids to buy Toyota Corollas because I wanted them to have reliable transportation. We bought a Toyota Camry new in 86, drove it for 16 trouble free years. What a car! In 02 Toyota dealers did not want to give me two cents for the old Camry.
A Honda Dealer gave us 4 grand on an 02 Honda Accord. We still have it. Great car but not quite a Toyota.

Some of the plants I work at are running Toyota Fork Trucks. Much more reliable than the domestic junk they replaced. I would absolutely love to see Toyota market a truck with the specs to pull a Montana.

I would seriously consider a Toyota towmotor if they ever came out with one, mainly for the proven engineering and reliability -

The problem is they have the most conservative engineers in the world, and they rely too heavily on their proven past. It took forever for them to introduce a V-6 (still pushing the 6,000 lb Land Cruiser with a 2.2 Liter 4 banger well after Dodge already had a V-8 in the little Dakota pickup). It took equally as long to introduce a V-8 in their pickup line, even when they already had one in Lexus. They even stuffed the V-8 it in a boat before the pickups (not sure where their marketing priorities were - As soon as Toyota announced thier new boat, Master Craft shoved a Cadillac Northstar in theirs and introduced it a year before Toyota got into production). I've even looked a few times at the Lexus E400 sedan to get thier V-8, but it's still Rear wheel drive and the body style hasn't changed since they were introduced 15 years ago. No, I won't live long enough for Toyota to come out with a towmotor.

I don't think it's Honda's game either - they are committed to the fuel efficient market and wouldn't dare think to get involved in the heavy duty market.

I guess that is why we get the early Ford 6.0's and those ugly headlights on the GMC's - the big 3 are in a tight competition and are continuously introducing new technology to stay alive. Some are mistakes - but most are fantastic! (re-introduction of the Hemi!, V-10s!, Tow Command!, Allisons!, etc)

After all, this thread would never be 5 pages long if we were talking Toyota and Honda

Don, my 2003 F350 weighed 7560, full diesel and us onboard. The F250 is 8560 with same load. Both include the hitch and full toolbox plus whatever gear we carry inside. You're right on the 9900 GVWR on the 2003 F350. So the 2005 F250 is 100 lbs more on GVWR. Everything I've been told by our attorney and our insurance agent is so long as we are private the numbers on the door are a rating, not a legal requirement. We would not be ticketed for being over any of the ratings. They also said if an accident was believed to be caused by overloading then and only then there could be some legal consequences, just like if someone felt my driving were negligent. A highway patrol acquaintance once told me the same, back when we lived in a stick home. 3,000 pounds more GCWR, 1200 pounds more tow rating, 100 pounds more gvwr, much stronger frame, control arms, and brakes translate to more beef in my mind. This is one of those things we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm perfectly happy with my setup and it has done an excellent job and shows no problems at just under 65,000 miles including close to 30k towing. And it's very stable when towing in all conditions. I find it hard to argue with success. But, as I said, we can agree to disagree and remain friends.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Steve, I have the utmost respect for your experience and talent and I, for sure want to stay friends with you. Thanks for being a good sport, and like you said even friends don't always agree with each other. Donna has been my wife and my best friend for over 35 years and she does not always agree with me. Take care and I look forward to more of your posts.

The new Montana colors look great with your truck.

Thank you but I don't think my headlights are ugly. To each his own but you don't have to knock what someone else has. We have had several Buicks that have been far more reliable than the Toyotas we had. I firmly believe in buying American products.
Happy trails...............................

Sue , you have Toyotas built in the USA and you have Dodges built in Mexico. Tell me which is more American. In a Global Economy there is no such thing as patriotic business practices. Our Sawmills close down as we export raw logs to the USA. If the Americans were not such large consumers of newsprint and directory paper, I would be out of a job.
Ford and GMC are closing plants down in Canada. Honda is building plants. The world needs trade and we all live better for it.......... feel free to disagree.

Sue,
I love your truck!! And I also agree with you. We need to keep our money in our own economy. More and more U.S. companies are heading overseas, we are killing ourselves.

Comment...Both of our Honda's were built in Marysville, Ohio by American workers paid in US dollars and spent in the US economy.Toyota has plants and is Building plants in the USA..They employ American workers , paid in US Dollars and spent in the US economy.. These are American built cars. Take a look at the labels on your clothing most likely it id made in a foreign country by foregin workers paid in foreign money and spent in a foreign economy. Note in this mornings news that GM is extending it's warranty in a attempt to improve sales over foreign cars of HIGHER quality.Comment.I posted this before ..In a conversatuon with the Ohio Weight Police when inspecting our School busses I asked them about weight and safety on the RV's.We are not commerical so we are not required to pull into the weight stations, keep logs, etc...Howver you can and will be stopped IF they see a safety violation and once you are stopped anything goes and you can be ticketed for over weight as a safety issue ..It has happened and it will happen again. We all have choices..use them wisely...

Gosh I jumped to the end of this thread thinking I was going to find posts about Cat's new truck.

Congrats on the new truck we love our 2005 model. We have almost the same truck except the seats. I have a horrible back and the leather seats weren't as comfy as the cloth. We love our mirrors that extend and retract with a little button. Hope you have many miles of safe pulling ahead of you.

Our Hondas also were built in Marysville, OH. I recall the sticker on one said 97% domestic American content or something to that effect. Our Buick was considerably less domestic content. But to me the content percentage is not the only factor. There is also where the profit goes.

One thing I neglected to say is the weights I posted for my F250 and my F350 include the hitch, rhino liners, steel crossbed toolbox with a couple hundred pounds of weight in it, at least, both of us, and a full tank of diesel plus the gear we have with us in the truck.

I've owned more GM in my life than Ford. I switched to Ford when I got tired of being known by my first name in the GM service bays. When Ford starts treating me not nice I'll switch again. Or, given the price of these things today, when I'm ready to trade I'll probably look at all of them, eliminate those I don't like, then take the one that gives me the best deal. Brand loyalty is one thing, getting into my wallet is another.

Cat, I can't remember if I congratulated you before and I'm not wading through 6 pages of this thread to jog my memory. So, congratulations on the new truck. Sounds like a nice one and I'm sure it will do a fine job for you.
