The "screw in type stems" you are referring to are called clamp in and are the best type to use. Some have the hex nut on the outside of the wheel and some have the hex nut on the inside of the wheel. Steel wheels will accept either kind, but SOME alloy wheels will only accept the ones with the nut on the inside of the wheel. You may have to special order the stems.
The type you are now using are called snap in and aren't the best in the west, but are the most commonly used high pressure stem.
