Ratings on RV sites

We have been using Woodall's on our last two big trips, and 16 sites so far, and have been not very impressed with the sites we picked that were rated 9 and above? What does everyone else use for picking their RV sites to stay at?

More than anything else we use word of mouth. Asking for recommendations here and on other forums we belong to have been the best scources for finding parks we will like.

OK, I don't see where you can read reviews on Good Sam, and All Stays is not very thorough in rating the current site we are at. We are in Goleta, CA near Santa Barbara, CA on the coast near the ocean, at Ocean Mesa at El Capitan RV Park, and Woodall's and Good Sam rate this place a 9 or above, and there is hardly any wifi, and there is a methane/sewer smell at the bottom of this park where we are at, and there are ants everywhere, and no grass, just concrete pads and dirt, and it is $115/ night here? WTH?

We normally check out the campground reviews on Good Sam but I also open Google maps and try to get a close up view of the campground. Using the campground site map along with Google maps has helped eleminate a lot of questionable sites.

We use three:
1. campgroundreviews.com
2. Allstays Camp and RV
3. Good Sam Trip Planner site

I like RVParkReviews the best followed by AllStays. Between these, we're always able to make an informed decision as to where we want to stay.

The reviews and ratings on RVParkReviews are by people that have stayed at the reviewed park and seem to be the most informative and accurate.

Allstays seems to have some that aren't reviewed in the others, but their reviews a short and more of a listing of amenities rather than a narrative type review.

The Good Sam Trip Planner site is handy for find places along your route.

X2! This combination seems to be reasonably accurate most of the time!

Vipermanden, when you use All Stays, do you go to the actual reviews or just look at the stars. I have found the reviews quite helpful. One thing I do notice is a big difference between motor home reviews and fifth wheel reviews.

OK, it looks like the RV park reviews are good, except not very current. I will add our review. This place gets $115 per night, and I'm not sure why. we are here tonight with 80-100 spots, and we are only one of 3 I see on the lower section with us being the only one in the bottom area, so I will be sleeping with my gun under my pillow? :-) Plus their wifi sucks down here at the bottom, and there is a methane sewer smell, and lots of ants. I sprayed raid all over every contact point they might want to crawl up the RV on. Not sure how this place gets so much money per night?

By reading all the reviews, I read the ones listed plus Yelp and TripAdvisor. Your place, Ocean Mesa at El Capitan RV Park, gets pretty good remarks with most complaints pertaining to the noise from the highways. The other complaints pertained to the high price, weak wifi and staff not being helpful. Based on this, I would probably go for another CG.

We have found Good Sam to be pretty good. However we continue to be amazed to pull into a park with high ratings that is crappy, and to pull into a park with average or low ratings, and thought it was a 10/10/10 park. When we have time, we take a look at the park specific homepage if they have one. A picture gallery is worth a thousand words.

We use Good Sams, RV Park Review, but always Google Earth the area and check another site called CrimeReports.

A campground, or motel for that matter, could get decent reviews but be located right next to a public housing project or some type of high crime area. I do the same when looking for a Walmart to overnight in.

I don't make my decision based on any regular RV park review. Everyones opinions/standards are too different.

We don't use any of those. We look at what is along our route of travel and factor in a normal 300 mile or so travel day then look for Rv sites that meet our travel needs. For overnighters we prefer KOA as they are usually easy in easy out and can accommodate our rig. For longer travel stays we check this forum for references and look at RV park websites. Google earth is a good resource.

I almost always look at campgroundreviews.com. But you have to take the reviews with a grain of salt. Often times someone will give a park a very low rating because "the desk person had a bad attitude", "wifi was not good", "someone left trash in the fire pit", etc. without really saying anything about how good or bad the actual sites and facilities were. If the park reviews are generally 8-10 and there are a couple of 2-3 for (in my opinion) petty reasons, then I pretty much ignore those. And conversely, if the park generally gets 2-4 and there are a couple of glowing 10s, then I question the validity of those also.

I typically use google maps street view and satellite view to get an idea of a park before choosing.

I try to remember to give a review of each place we stay. Just wish more did to keep it more current.

We use KOA's when we can and normally I plan our trips to stay at a KOA. They are fairly consistent in quality and if there is a issue at the site there's a KOA employee to assist. They can be a few dollars more per night than other campgrounds but we feel its worth the expense.

I use an app on my ndroid tablet called RV Parks and Campgrounds which uses Google maps with or without satellite views to locate campgrounds. It has button links to go the campground's web site, do a google search for the campground name which always has the campgroundreviews.com website for this park listed and a navigate button which will link you into google maps or whichever default mapping app you use.

Lots of research available a just a few clicks and the app is free. I use rv park reviews like other have stated. filter based on what the complaints are and if they are something I care about or not.
