Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer, SD

Sue and I have landed workamping positions at Crazy Horse Memorial from May to September.

After hanging in Quartzsite until mid March we will make our way to Livingston, TX to switch our residency and domicile to Texas (due to the healthcare issue) then head to Crazy Horse for May 6th start.

If you are in the area there is a campground with full hook-ups called Heritage Village a mile from the Memorial which is where we will be staying for the duration.

Hope to see y'all there this summer!

Les

Sounds like a wonderful summer gig to me. It's been 20 years since our family experience a wonderful 10 day vacation in that area and we have always said it's time to go back and see what has changed, especially with Crazy Horse.

If we get that way we will be sure to look you up!! Enjoy!!!

We understand that the family has accepted outside funding and Government money to complete the project. We were there about 6 years ago.

As of May when we were there, they were still rejecting any Government money, but that could have changed in the last 6 months.

I'm glad they did except funding. It is a wonderful monument to the native people of our country. The sooner we can get it finished the better. I was there last year.

We workcamped @ Mt Rushmore the summer of '01. A wonderful summer season. We went to a couple of the night time blasts, a wonderful experience. Be sure you take time to find Rochford, SD, and have a drink there. Only one bar there and a "mall". (google it)

Visit Deadwood, especially the cemetery where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are buried. We understand that 1/2 of the casinos are closed in Deadwood. Be sure you do the drive thru Custer ST park on the south side of the highway where the buffalo herds roam.

The first full week of August is Sturgis, Got to do at least for a day. If you are off on Wednesday of that week, got to do Wyoming Wednesday. A LARGE party.

Keystone, the week of Sturgis and also Custer are party central, so make that a must do.

Stay till the first of October, plan a drive thru Spearfish Canyon. The aspens will be turning and will be something to remember for ever.
We left Keystone October 4th in a light snow. Was a Halmark Card kind of day.

Have a great summer.

Jim

We are so looking forward to getting back to the Black Hills for sure....We did a fly and ride (rented a Harley) about 10 years ago and toured the whole area for about a week...that was all she wrote and we fell in love with the SD. The campground backs up to the Mickelson trail which stretches from 108 miles in the Black Hills!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_S._Mickelson_Trail

The Memorial does not accept any government funding. They do accept private funding from sources such as admission fees and donations, etc.

Sounds like a great gig!! And don't forget, you're really not far from Devil's Tower. Incredible. Go at night and wait for the aliens to show up!!

A little googling today tells me that they still do not accept tax dollars for the project.

We were there about 25 years ago. Then again 3 yrs ago. Progress was marginal. At this pace I won't see it done in my lifetime

Be sure and see Bear Country in Rapid City. Sounds like a tourist trap, but it isn't, and is well worth a visit.
