Got a Buck tonight

Went out hunting this afternoon after the Thanksgiving meal at the campground. You have to be careful walking in the campground, you can bump into a white tail. Almost tame.

Found the Axis deer to be quite easy to spook, especially when hunting on the golf cart. Found a herd of probably 60 and the head Buck was beautiful. Pics are not too good, was almost dark and was probably 75 yds away.

Those are beautiful animals. I still get up before daylight and go out and sit in a blind. I still carry a gun. But I don't really hunt any longer. I just enjoy sitting in the woods and watching the birds and animals of all kinds. Axis deer have been showing up in the TX hill country for a number of years now. An extra thrill when one walks by.

How wide spread are the Axis deer? Do they displace the whitetail deer?

They are thick in the Texas Hill Country and have been in-breading for a while. They are twice the size of the native white tail.

No, don't think they dis-place them. The white tails are almost like pets in the campground, the Axis do not come into the campground and you almost never see a white tail in a Axis group.

I'll try and get some white tail pics. They are easy to approach and are not afraid of the golf cart.

jlb27537, Where are you??
We are at Garner State Park 30 miles from Uvalde and see them here all the time.

Native to India, where it is known as the "chital," the axis deer was introduced into Texas about 1932. In 1988, free-ranging herds were established in 27 counties of central and southern Texas. At this time, it also occurs as a confined animal on ranches in 67 other counties. Axis deer are the most abundant exotic ungulate in Texas.

Google will give you more information than you want.
