For you Ford fans

If you like seeing what's involved in doing some major wrench turning on our tow vehicles like pulling engine and tearing it down I have a site for you. You will probably have to sign up but worth it. This guy is really good and is a tech at a dealer ship in Massachusetts. Has excellent pictures and write up.
I'm not writing this thread to slam Ford. I would love to see one like it on Duramax.
The site is an RV site and is rvtalk: http://www.myrvtalk.com/tow-vehicle-...-4-owners.html

sure glad I dont have a 2010 ford. I heard a while back that there was 2 years that that is what had to be done, you must remove the cab off the chassie to do any kind of work on the motor. good thing that he had ESP. my Bro in law had to have that done to his when his trans mission seal started to leak, they ended up replacing the fly wheel and a bunch of other things besides seals and he had less than 30 K on his ford f350.

I have one and I can't wait for the cab off repairs. It will be exciting to watch Ford mechanics pop the cab to the credit of the original Ford engineers that decided to ignore this nightmare issue. It's only about 20 hrs. to remove the cab, and the last time I was there and inquired about it, the service rep said it's only four bolts. Yea, at $500 a bolt and then they have to fix whatever is wrong. Gotta love it.

Actually Ford's book time to remove the cab is 5.9 hours for standard and super cabs and 6.1 hours for Crew Cabs. In reality, an experienced mechanic (and some of them have had a lot of practice) can do it in under an hour. I have no idea why the book time is so high relative to reality, but that is the way it is with every book time I have ever seen.

It is quicker to change turbos with the cab off than with it on. The problem is we shade tree mechanics don't have a lift at home.

Yes Carl you are right. Mechanics I have talked to would much rather the cab-off process when getting to major components. The 2008 forward ( not sure about earlier models) Fords were designed for cab off access to the engine. I watched the tear down and rebuild of a Dura-max inside the confines of the engine bay and believe me, it was night-marish compared to the clear, clean access provided with the Ford cab-off design. I have seen a 2009 Power Stroke rebuild- in and out the dealership in 5 days. Ford's cab-off repair process is not a hap-hazard, stumbled upon, defect, it was designed that way, and built for easy cab removal. The techs at my dealership love it! If you take your Ford to a shop that stirs up a scare about removing the cab, run like hell! they know not of what they speak. they are scheming to double-down on shop hours.

The engineering design included quick disconnects on all electrical circuits crossing from the cab to the frame area. If you add a circuit or two (such as backup cameras, upfitter switch connections, etc.) try to incorporate quick disconnects there too. Should you be unlucky enough to experience a cab off repair, the mechanic will appreciate it (and it increases the odds of the addition still working when you get it back)

The last time I had my "'08 in the shop I was discussing the cab off scenario with the service manager and he also said it only takes about an hour. Wonder what they charge a customer if it is done.....actual time or book time?

They had a classic car and rod show here July 4th. Lots of old cars, 50's thru 70's mostly with a few earlier and later. But one thing that got my attention and I had forgotten about. There were several early/mid 60's models pickups. You could get in the engine compartment with both feet and still have room left, even with a V8. Probably could have shut the hood with you in it and still be able to move around.
Oh, have times have changed.
