About fell over!
Pulled into an Pilot station in lower Indiana today and used my NEW RV Advantage Card. Ran it at the pump and message came up and said to see the cashier! Walked inside and asked the cashier what the problem was. She took the card and said there shouldn't be any problem. She ran the card inside and I gave her the approximate dollars I'd need. Filled up and noticed the price was different than what was on the pump previously. Went back inside and asked why the difference. Manager was called and she told me if I had a DOT # I would get the previous price! I told her if I had a DOT # I wouldn't be inthere talking to her. The price started at $4.03 a gallon but by the time all was done it ended up at $4.269 a gallon and that was with the 3 cent a gallon discount!!! If I had known about the tax being added at the Pilot store, I would have stopped about 10 blocks back and filled for the actual $4.03!
Just thought I'd warn you all about the stations there!

Had my first fill today... $4.39 a gallon in my neck of the woods - SW Washington State and demand is down from a year ago from what I have read so go figure.

Most of the truck stops advertise cash and credit prices. Some gas stations have started the same thing except they dont tell you that, and you only notice if you compare credit price per gallon to advertised price.

Filled up for 4.03.9 which is about the best around here. I hate to think what it's going to cost me to drive back to Illinois especially going through Indiana. I usually top it off in Kentucky and only put enough in to get me from Il to In. It used to be a lot cheaper in In but that was many years ago. Indiana has been playing the exempt game for at least three years now. Sory yyou got caught up in it.

Dick if you come up through Inidana like we did from Kentucky into Illinois, there is just a short amount of Indiana to go through and you should be able to make it through IN without refueling. I made the mistake of not topping off before heading across the border. Won't happen next time!

Ran into that at Goshen last fall. I got away with it because I was filling a standard tank, but the MOC member before me got cut off after a certain amount (bed mounted extra tank) and when he went inside they told him about the tax situation. That was at a regular station, but we were at the truck pumps and they couldn't tell if I was a hauler or private. I would guess if you went to the other station the same price would apply unless you were at the truck pumps. I wasn't trying to rip them off, I didn't understand what had happened until I was back at the rally and talked to the other member.

Ron we will be traveling 65 through the whole state of In. I figure if I top off in Ky I can make it through to wherever. Wherever is when we stop after 2-3 hours of driving which is normal for us and our bladders. I usually fill up before I reach 1/4 tank but will only put enough in to get me to Illinois.

You should be happy to get home! Just paid $3.95.9 here about an hour ago and we're always higher than the towns around us. Plus we're having Florida weather. Upper 70's and 80's for the next week then down to the middle 60's then back to the 70's. Figures, it's the first winter I've been able to go and it's the mildest winter I can remember.

I can relate exactly to what you experienced Ron. I did the same exact thing when I went to Indiana a few years ago to haul our boat back. Thought I was saving money and then found out that the added tax made the price pretty much equal what it was in the adjoining states on the way home (except West Virginia - prices are always higher here because of outlandish added state taxes).

Lots of stations now post a "cash" price. Who carries
$200 cash to fill their truck? We quit using Pilot and Chevron for that reason after getting burned. We have two tanks and try to buy our fuel after doing research to compare prices for the surrounding area using Gas Buddies, a google gadget that you can put your zip code in, and MotorTrend.com. We bought fuel yesterday for $3.82, the nest cheapest price was $4.03. On 70 gallons we saved $14.70.

As many of you have stated, in Indiana, there is a truck exempt price, and then there is the 'auto' price. Indiana charges trucking companies in a different manner so the exempt price is minus the fuel taxes. I guess to not have a double tax. Then on top of that, Pilot charges for using a credit card. Pretty screwy, but remember it is Indiana! (Yes, I live there)

I remember when I lived in Indiana as a kid, Illinois had front license plates and Indiana didn't. Illinois plates said "land of Lincoln" on them. Many people, my dad included, bought front plates for their cars in Indiana that read "Indiana land of taxes". They were right then and according to my sister who still lives in Indiana they are still correct today.

All you midwest folks want to feel good about your taxes, let's get the California folks into the state/local tax conversation.

There are two types of PFJ stations. The Corporate station, and the Independent station. The independent stations can do just about what they want to do and do not have to honor the PFJ Advantage card. Some stations only honor the Advantage Card in the Truck Diesel lane.
Here is the RV Guide for service in each state.
I always use the Truck Diesel lanes, even when I had the 3400RL.

On our way down to Florida I stopped at a Flying J and used the card I had from last year! It wouldn't take so had to go inside. They told me that my card was an old one so we signed me up for a new one! When I used the new card in Tennessee, I got the same response on the pump so had to go inside again. This time they asked to see the card and told me it was an old card again and we signed me up for a new one again. When I filled in Indiana, it didn't matter what card I had, period. I'm heading out to the Flying J here outside of Omaha and see what they say! If I get another card, I'm contacting Corporate and possibly Trailer Life Magazine! While in Tennessee I found out Pilot originated in Knoxville and that they are all over independent or corporate!

Once Flying J started closing stations or were taken over by Pilot(?) everything was up for grabs. Not only did we experience problems at the pumps but inside as well. Service went down hill including the lousy food and service by Dennys so now we don't even stop at Flying Js anymore.
