I believe most mastercraft are made overseas,so it isn't a good reference for goodyear. Goodyear,BFG,Michellin all make a good tire and there are a lot of post here on tires. Most of the foriegn tires with american names have not held up well on trailers. You will hear from many on what tire to use as they have been all thru the mill.

Take a look at the BFGoodrich Commercial T/A'a. We had those on our last rig, great tire. I did a lot of research on those and other tires before settling on them. And I will be putting them on the new rig. Rich

We have Goodyear G614s. No complaints. They have not lost pressure since installed. Have not heard anything but good reports on MOC. Do make sure you get steel valve stems and that your wheels are 110 psi capable. Larry

firemedic,

I recently retired from the competition over in Topeka, IN. At that factory, we had been mounting Good Year G-614's on anything that had 7000lb axles under it and was having very good reports on them. I recall of 1 time, a retail customer had a G-614 go bad and Good Year covered it. We did not have to mess with it at the factory level.

So, I am very inclined, that our next unit or if I have to replace the "Marathons" on the Challenger, I would have to go to the G-614's.

BTW gang, since I mentioned the M word, I know that there are a lot of you swearing at and about these Marathons. I purchased 5 of these going on to close to 2 years ago now, and they are treating me real good.....so far. One of the main reasons I did buy them was because, even though they were made in China, Good Year gave me a 5 year warranty on these tires against manufacturing defects and workmanship. That means if they start to separate or, anything else, Good Year will replace the tire. Now, all I have to do is make sure they are properly inflated, keep them out of pot-holes and other road hazards, and I think they will be just fine.

When you go tire shopping, physically read the sidewall info- Insist on "Made In The U.S.A."- If it ain't made here, I don't buy!!! JMHO- Don

Happy with Michelin LTX M/S running them on the truck and trailer. Sure made the truck ride improve I'd think the camper ride is smother with the Michelin! Sams has $70 off when you buy a set of four.

Don't forget to consider replacing the spare. It should be the same size and rating (and preferably, the make). Tires do age, even if it sits under the rig like mine does.

Like MIMF I replaced my Missions with Marathons before I found they were prone to problems. I do baby these tires and keep them filled with air at all times (the rig is parked on my driveway) and have tire covers. When I check the tires they are no more than 1-2 psi under so I think things are mostly good and there is no unusual wear anywhere. My older rig has 6,000lb axles so I'm not sure G-614s are the way to go for next time and I have about 3 years left on these Marathons age-wise.

If you want to stick with STs, the recommendation is Maxxis - cost and availability are a concern. Actually the G-614 is considered an ST tire, but requires wheels with a 110psi rating and you'll need to investigate what psi to run since it might not need the maximum at 110psi, but they must be installed on 110psi rated tires. Also, install metal valve stems whatever tires you get. It's just no longer worth messing with rubber stems in case you get a TPMS system in the future.

For LTs on the rig, the major brand LT tires are used by many. Just be careful the ratings are good. You might need a different than expected tire size, so make sure it fits.

I didn't check "Steves" link but it probably contains this and much more information on tires on our Montys. Take your time, read as much as you can, then you should be able to make a comfortable decision. Hopefully, LonnieB (MOC member and tire store manager) will be along to remind us what will work.

Thanks for all the info. Learning a lot here and on rv.net forums. We currently have, and the rig came with, LT235/85R16E's and our axle weight is 5,080# each. We travel about 8,000 miles per year broken up into 500 mile trips and one 3-4,000 mile trip. Being in south Florida, the heat and sun are a concern even though we keep our rig in covered storage. We hope to full-time for about 2 years (maybe longer) in about 3-4 years from now if all goes well. I've read about the XPS Ribs sidewalls cracking when they sit too long and ours does sit most of the summer. Thinking about going with the BFG Comm T/A's and switching to the Ribs when the full-timing begins??? Read though, the Ribs are summer tires not for winter use and don't know if/when we'll hit any snow.

I never get concerned about the tires sitting for a long time. My concerns have to do with the shelf life of the tires. Maximum recommended life is seven years. However, that's pushing it. For those who spend all their time on the road (fulltimers), you should change your tires every five years to be safe. I change every four years because that's just me. Peace of mind means a lot to me. Please don't evaluate your tires based on the remaining tread you see on your tires.

Don't come into Michigan if you don't want potholes. We have a few (thousand) of them around here. You're lucky if you can miss one.

I went with 17.5 goodyear g114s. Bought new hub piloted wheels, new drums, caps and nuts. It cost me huge bucks but so did the trailer. Why skimp on something as important as wheels and tires. I admit I went to overkill a little bit but I have always run the best tires I could find out there. It is your life, your families life, other peoples lives and a protection of your vehicle or trailer.

I run Goodrich Commercial T/As on my 2955. Great tires, no problems. Don't know what weight you carry, but check them out if they will work for you.
