Funky Monty Tires

While cleaning up the tires on the Monty before camping this past weekend, I noticed that each of the 4 tires have at least 1 to 3 indentations in their side walls. They are very, very slightly pushed in but only in these spots. Since we just got this (new to us) Monty, and I never saw this in our past several owned TT's, should I be concerned? I checked the dates on the sidewalls and they were made just last year. I cannot see any scuffing or abrasion at these spots.

I noticed the same on my tires when I picked up the Monty new in Feb of this year. We have Goodyear Marathon tires from China on it and I plan on changing them out next week for G614's. What brand of tire is on your unit? If they are Marathons from China, I would change them out based on the feedback I have seen on those tires here and on rv.net.

I see a lot of complaints about rv tires. I have a diesel truck mag. that shows a fifth wheel and a GM Duramax that they installed 19 inch rims and tires on because of problems with tire wear and sidewall problems on the regular tires. The work was done by a professional company.

Changed our Mission Time bombs to BF Goodrich Commercial TA's. I lucked out as one of my time bombs was set "to go off" as a belt was starting to break when I had the BFG's installed.

Just went out and checked.....have the Marathons on ours as well. To the sound of things, I'd better look up some previous threads on these tires!

I refused to drive the new rig off of the lot with the Marathons. Dealer was made aware of it and we worked out a deal on changing them out to 614's. Totally pleased with the "Made in USA" Goodyears versus the "Made in China" Goodyears.

I ran Firestones on another truck I had and also on a 5th wheel stock trailer that had indentations on the side walls. I stopped at several tire shops and asked about the tires and they all said not to worry about them, lots of tires have indentations. I have looked around and they were right,I have seen many tires with the indentitions on them on traiers and trucks. Many of the trucks are 18 wheelers. If you get a blister on a tire you have a problem. I have ran the tires on the stock trailer over 30,000 miles with weights up to 15,000 lbs over some real rough roads.

Those indentations are nothing to worry about, just where the plies join together. Now the model of tire(Marathon), that's another story

I hope LonnieB gets on soon and confirms the indentations on a sidewall are part of the manufacturing process and nothing to worry about. I am talking about the indentations that are perpendicular to the bead and go out towards the tread. If the indentation follows the circumference, then THAT'S a problem.

I have had many tires with this indentation, some worse than others and they have never given me a problem. I have talked to many tire personnel who always provided the same story so no surprises to worry about.

Of course this does nothing regarding the quality of the tire but the indentation has nothing to do with problems (that I know of). Again, hopefully LonnieB sets this straight since he's seen more tires in one month that I will ever see in my lifetime.

I was told the same thing when I took my new 2010 Monty to the Goodyear dealer and had him look at the Marathons that came with it. I still didn't like the way they looked and had them replaced with Bridgestone Duravis R250s (which DON'T have indentations and are made in USA)

OK, well I'm no Lonnie B. but I will chime in with my observation of MANY tires on lots of different vehicles over 40+ years of driving and modifying cars, trucks etc. that indentations are fairly normal. Not all tires have them obviously, but this has nothing to do with whether or not they are made in China or what brand they are.
In fact, I have some indentations on my BFGs on my trailer right now.
Very slight and nothing to worry about...
What say you, Lonnie B.?

We had them on ours also... changed them out to the BF Goodrich as soon as we got it home. Sold them to the tire dealer and bought the no rust lug nuts for the cost of the trade in's! Now we have peace of mind!

Ya, it's discouraging that they put China bombs on our nice trailers, but at least you are one of the informed Monty owners who can take corrective action before something bad happens!
BFG Commercials are a good choice IMO (that's why I bought 'em ) but there are other good ones too. Not sure if your trailer weight would require the higher capacity G614 tires or not...

The BFG's have worked for me. I run them on the TV also. I got rid of the road bombs after a blowout.

Sorry it took me so long to see this.

As others have said, the indentations are nothing to worry about. It is where the sidewall plies overlap and are joined. You can see it on almost every tire if you get the light just right and look close enough. Purely cosmetic.

Bubbles, bulges, or distortion on any part of the tire are cause for concern. The tire should be removed immediately and taken to a proffessional as soon as possible.
