I have to agree with you on your thoughts of medium duty trucks are going to handle the load much easier than any of the 3/4 tons or 1 tons. This is the reason if I do venture into the transport business I am going with a 4500 or larger. If I was fulltiming I am sure I would have gone with a larger truck to do the job. If cost is not an option to worry about when it comes time to replace your current truck, I would seriously look at the Kodiak's or even the Frieghtliner M2. More is always better than less. If you would like, I have more links to dealerships w/ the M2 and other medium duty trucks.
