Excessive propane usage

I had one of my propane tanks go empty. There was a faint smell of propane when I opened the door to take it out for refill. I turned the knob to the other tank and made sure I had propane flowing. After two weeks without using the propane except for the stove, that tank went empty and again the smell of propane. Is it possible I have a leak somewhere and if so how do I find it?

Get a cheap spray bottle and put in about a cup of water and a tablespoon of Dawn dish soap......shake well. Spray all connections and around the regulators. If a leak, you will see bubbles.

I had abad crimp fitting on mine right after I got it. I replaced the supply hose and haven't had a problem since. Get you some soapy water and go hunting. Watch for the bubb,es

I had a leak on the tank in the street side compartment. The hose was leaking at the crimp fitting where it connects to the tank. When I moved the hose around I could actually hear the leak. I replaced with one from Lowes and problem solved. I actually bought a hose long enough to put a 'loop' in then connected to the tank. This took any stress off of the fitting and allows me to move the tank around without putting the fitting in a bind. Tim

Also check the pipe that runs between to two compartments. I had the same problem and found the leak in a loose elbow on the pipe.

Based on what you described, clearly a leak. Pretty tough to use that much propane in two weeks unless running the furnance.

Spray water on the selector knob of the switchover regulator(street side), ours was slowly leaking out there.

Ours came with a leak. They over threaded the black pipe that runs thru the front compartment so then the nuts couldn't fully seal when tightened down. Hard to find since the leak was so small the bubbles it made were just like the small ones I sprayed on it. It the propane door was shut (on mine it was the street side) overnight and there was no wind you could smell it in the morning when you opened the door.

Wow, I never realized how common this problem is. We had the same leak in one of our hoses. It went for several years then one day propane smell and could not find until I wiggled the fill hose on the right tank and heard a hissing noise. Don't know why it failed, but that hose was stiff as a board when I pulled it out. All the other hoses were still flexible.

No way you can smell gas without a leak. It isn't that hard to find most of the time.

The leaks are taken care of. One was on the crimp fitting going into the switch/regulator and the other one was the red regulator on the other tank. Took abut 15 minutes to find them both and a half hour to install the parts after two trips to Lowes and an RV parts place. Thanks for the help everyone.
