Receiver Hitch on the back

Hello Group,

Before we start, I realize Keystone/Lippert says you can not put a hitch on the back cause it will void the warranty.

Now, with that said, I want to put a 2" receiver type hitch on the back on my 3150RL. Those of you that either double tow, or use the hitch for a platform for your handicap chair, I am open to your input.

Do you have to have a hitch made at a local welding shop or are their hitches made that you can buy and have installed.

Depending on what you want to tow, you might consider adding additional support from the I-beams on either side. Using a welding shop is probably wise if adding this additional support.

When we made our generator carrier, we added additional 1 1/4" receivers by we,ding them to a plate that we then bolted to the I-beams. We a,so used the existing 1 1/4" receiver.

I had a welding shop custom install it with additional bracing and anchor points.
I figure if I can haul 450 lbs of water on the rear, surely I can leave the water and handle 200 lbs of pin weight.

I have the Curt hitch welded on to the back too, with added support under the camper. I only carry a bike rack back there. But, if I decide to put something else there, its ready to go.

That's the same one we installed on our rig.

When our frame warranty is up, we'll be installing a towing hitch back there and will have it reinforced by a welding shop.

The Hidden Hitch (aka DrawTite) 82201 is another 72" wide adjustable hitch which can be installed. Both the Curt and the Hidden Hitch need an extension on some Montanas to extend out from under the rear cap. An extension will cost you capacity (specifically tongue weight). A good welder can help overcome these limitations.

If you are looking to carry a handicap chair, have your considered putting a hitch on the front of your truck?

I agree with Michael, two outriggers are the way to go.
A good welding shop is a must, the beefier the better.

Like others, we had a welding shop (that specializes in hitches) fabricate a 2" hitch for ours. We carry a blue tote tank and Yamaha 2400 generator on a platform with a 2" receiver on it fitted with a Swagman bike rack with 2 bikes. It doesn't bounce or move. The factory hitch would bounce like crazy with just the Swagman and two bikes.

I really like the setups I have seen on here, but was wondering if you run your gennys while they are on the hitches. If so do you feel the vibration throughout the coach?

All the discussion is about hitches. Hitches are not the issue. Lippert voids the warranty due to their weak frame.

Tom ... respectfully stating ... the topic started out with the poster acknowledging the frame warranty issue ... several of us have towed for years behind several different Montanas without issue and will continue to do so. He was just asking what fashion of a hitch we use.

Our dealer removed the 1-1/4 tubing stock hitch and built the same thing out of 2" stock. We haul our bikes on it only. After our first trip the hitch visibly sagged and so I asked if anything could be done. We just returned from a 1750 mile trip with the same rack and bikes on the 2" hitch and no sag what so ever. My buddy following me said there was very little movement as well-not the case with the 1-1/4" stock hitch. With our length, I never intend to double tow, but I think this is definitely something Keystone should look at for those that utilize a bike rack or cargo carrier of limited weight capacity. BTW, Keystone would not stand up for the hitch-I had to pay for it.

We had the factory hitch reciever on our trailer but with just placing two bicycles on the hitch, it swayed all over the place and we almost lost our bikes. I went to MOR/Ryde and had them install a much better reciever and now the problem has been eliminated. The cost was around $700 if I remember.

Understand. My point was that Lippert voids the warranty for a reason. That some folks are towing without a problem is good, however, there is a reason for what Lippert is doing.

We have the 2-bike Swagman carrier on the back of our trailer with the 1 1/2 receiver and it does just fine. Went across the U.S. with no problems and very little movement.
