HOTR,
Of course you are correct that one must reduce the load by truck weight and contents that ride on the rear axle. That all must be subtracted to find a net margin. I have not run bubba across the scales yet. Fully loaded with trailer hooked on my 2500HD I had 7380 pounds on the rear axle. Thats why I traded. I figure with Bubba's extra rear wheels and longer bed I will have maybe 500 pounds more on that axle and will still be under 8200 pound GAWR and well under the Tire limit of 9880. That remains to be seen.

Rich, I wasn't aware the dually comes with smaller tires than the single rear wheel on the front. I could understand it on the rears. My '05 F250 came with LT265/75R17 all around. 18 inch is an option.

We have a 2017 3791RD, Our previous unit was a Cougar and the truck I have is a 2015 2500HD Silverado gas and long bed. Last winter we towed to Calif. and back to Pa. The only upgrade to the truck was a set of air bags. Do not know what our unit weight is, will weight it this year. Had no problems towing the 3791 with this truck. Only problem was finding stations I could get into for gas. Upon returning to Pa. had to replace the original tires with only 7,000 miles on them, two were starting to separate. I replaced original tires with the new Goodyear Endurance tires and installed TPMS Tire Pressure and Temp system. Will see how these new Endurance tires work out.

Did you notice that this topic is almost 12 years old? BTW we are full timers and the ACTUAL Cat certified weight of our 2018.5 3791RD is 16,800. Although we have plenty of power to tow it we are BARELY legal to do so. With your 3/4 ton truck you have got to be way over and all air bags do is level the load but not increase truck's carrying capacity.

Could it be that the tires failed because they were run with to much weight on them for several thousand miles? I know that original tires are sometimes subpar but running right at capacity or even beyond sounds like it could also impact tire life.

To WeBeFulltime, I realize the air bags just level the truck, that's why I had them installed. The dealership had our 3791 weighted from the factory and it was 13,325 dry, I figured loaded it was a little over 14,000 or more. The truck is rated for 14,100 pounds although the dealership said I could Easley go to 15,000 if needed. Tires on truck are rated for a little over 4,000 per tire. I noticed the first time I towed our rig the steering felt a little light that's why the air bags were installed. Does your new 3791 have that pull out tray in the back of it? I was told the new 3791's are a lot heaver than ours is. Anyhow like I said our truck pulls and stops our rig just fine. The long bed helps in the stabily of the whole rig.

What truck do you have. What’s the HP? What tuner do you have? What’s your ET.
I may not be your normal RVer either. Mine is a 6.4 Ford with about 450+ rear wheel HP. A canoe can never be too light or a truck have too much power.
I have never ran my truck on the strip but it is fun to follow someone with a normal pickup or a diesel pusher and pass them on the first steep hill you come to when they slow down just a little bit. See Ya.

I recommend you take your complete rig as ready for travel to include all passengers and full fuel tank and have it weighed on a certified scale such as a CAT scale that will give axle weights. Then drop your trailer and weigh the truck by itself to get axle weights. You can use the figures to calculate your pin weight to know what your truck is CARRYING. There is a big difference in the terms what your truck can tow and how much it can carry. I think you will be surprised because I know I was. Although I am within limits (barely) on my 2012 F350 SRW PSD I did have to install a higher rated hitch.

Yes, we have the pull out tray in the back and love it but do have to be careful about weight distribution to not put too much back there and make the pin too light.

I gotta quit reading these strings where you guys talk about towing with just barely enough truck to be legal. No consideration for having a safety cushion at all. Just load her up and dang the mule.....

LOL! No different than driving a big rig down the road @79,900 lb when 80,000 is max legal. Not to mention that the load is 48,000 of that and is hazmat to include liquid oxygen at neg 300F in a shotgun tank. Legal is legal.

Safety? Tow standards say nothing about safety. The word is not in the standards.

I ran short haul with Hazardous (and I mean big time hazardous) oilfield chemicals myself loaded right up to the max. I have always considered myself LUCKY for the way we ran those trucks back in the day! I literally had nightmares about losing a load on I-20 around Shreveport, La. If you ever ran that stretch of road you know how rough it was back in the 70-80s. The guys in Longview,TX always laughed at me because I used double chains on the back of my loads (before rachet straps came along). But then I never lost a drum off the back either.

But we as campers are not trying to make money on a load so why push the limits? I can't tell the difference between a 3/4 ton and 1 tons ride and there isn't much difference in the price so why not step up to the next size truck just to get a little piece of mind that your well within safe towing capacity?

But most especially, when advising someone new to towing it is our RESPONSIBILTY to make sure they make not only a good economical choice but also a safe choice.

I have a 2013 Montana 3582RL (12,600 lbs) and pull it with a 2005 Silverado 2500HD Duramax. I have had no issues with stability or needing more power. I would recommend some air bags. They will level your truck when hooked up and that helps the ride, stability and towing.

I think sometimes there is a little confusion when it comes to power versus weight. All the late model trucks whether 3/4 ton or 1 ton for each particular model has the same h.p. and torque. Power is never an issure but weight certainly is. All Montana's can safely be towed behind a 1 ton dually , and 1 ton single wheel marginally . As for a 3/4 ton I doubt you will find hardly any that are not over weight but can tow the rig down the road just as easily as a 1 ton. If you don't weigh, you don't know.

Anybody, pulling any newer Montana (and most older Montanas) with a 3/4 ton truck, gas or diesel is over weight...either GVWR or GCWR...or both...period. Don't believe me, get your calculator out and do the numbers.

I don`t get it is it a tip over thing with a DRW over the SRW when towing.

It's not a tip over thing . You have nearly twice the weight capacity on a dually 1 ton compared to a 3/4 ton truck on the rear. Between my hitch weight, hitch and 60 gallons of fuel, i have over 4,000 pounds in the bed of my truck. No 3/4 ton truck can carry the weight of the rear of my truck safely. We are all concerned about the weight on the tires on our rv. Why shouldn't we be just as concerned about the weight on the tires on our trucks.
