MS Registration
MS issues plates based on weight thresholds. I registered the truck at just over it's gross. The clerk seemed to think it should have included the trailer, but she didn't seem overly confident. I guess we'll see what happens, if anything.

Registration
I had to the first renewal since it is a Ford F450. They wanted weight data on the truck and what I intended to pull weight and length.

In 2006 a friend of mine broke down on a state hiway while towing a larger boat with a 1500 chevy. Hiway patrol made him un hook the boat and get a properly tagged vehicle to come get it.When I registered mine in 2009 I read the state statue as well as I could and interrupted it to say the tag weight must cover the truck and whatever was being towed. I went to the highway patrol to insure I was interpreting it correctly. I was, so I bought 24k plates. Cost a little more but don't have to worry about breaking down or the portable scales. All my acquaintances that tow still license at the minimum or 12K and only the one has had an issue. Life is full of choices and chances!

The process and requirements vary widely by state.
Be careful not to take info off this thread and assume you need to do the same. You need to know the rules in your state.

If you live in Saskatchewan, Canada and tow a non commercial trailer weighing more than 10,000lbs, you need a heavy trailer "G" endorsement on your license. You have to do some written tests and also go for a road test.

In NY you register the truck for GVW and the trailer at gross weight.

Here in Ohio the plates for the RV and truck are standard auto plates.

I think you're legally supposed to cover the weight of the vehicle when you register with the "declared" weight in NV. You don't need to include the trailer, but it needs to be high enough to cover GVWR @ 14000. I had my truck at 24000 to cover my trailer, but dropped it to 12000 last year after this was clarified at the Carson DMV office.

As jimcol states Missouri requires tv to be licensed for combined weight of tow vehicle and trailer You only get one plate and is to be mounted on the front. Police in Orlando Fl gave me a hard time about not having a plate on the rear. Did no get a ticket but was stopped for about 10 minutes

God I love Montana...I have a permanent registration on both my Pickup (it is over 11 years old) and on my High Country with is required on all trailers in Montana. pay the fee once and you are done for the life of that vehicle... In my case it was like $320 for both vehicles... Bring on the hate...LOL
