Black tank valve replacement

My black tank valve has a internal leak that is letting fluid bypass it. I just need to replaced the valve but I have some questions

Can I just replaced the valve itself?
Do I have to buy the whole cable assembly?
Any recommendations for a better valve?

You either have damaged seals or debris in the seals not allowing the blade of the valve to completely close. You can either replace the entire valve or just the seals.

That's what I thought, but I was wondering if I had to buy the whole assembly with the cable or if I can just by the slide valve by itself.

Have a look on Amazon. They have a bunch of pictures of the replacement valve and a 360⁰ view you can Pivot around.
YouTube has a lot of videos.
Hope this helps.

Replace the valve or just the seals, either way you are going to have to completely disassemble the valve and the extension for the cable to do it. Not fun. When I replaced my black tank valve I had to do both valves (black and gray) as they were joined to a single outlet pipe. After reinstalling and testing with clear water I had a leak and had to do it all over again to get it seated correctly. Carry on.

The valve to my front black tank has debris in it (my theory) and it will not close all the way and a little bit of stuff leaks and collects to provide a surprise when removing the hose cap. I need to clean the debris and/or replace the valve. Instead - I bought one of these and installed it on the hose connection. I hook up my hose to this - then pull this valve to drain the black tank. No more surprises.

Whether one has a leaky valve or not, this is one of the best add-ons ever

In addition to this exterior valve, I installed a clear 6 or 8 inch extension that twists on. Since this seems to rotate and or come loose, I put a small screw thru it to sort of permanently keep it attached. So I always shut of this valve when done draining and I can also tell when the black tank water is clear and clean.

Are you sure it is leaking? When I first got mine, I had the same thought. It was just residual water in the drain piping that found its' way to the discharge cap on the ride home. Using something like this is where I'd start.

then a clear elbow like this could help you determine how big the problem is.

This is what I went with. I believe this is it, just the valve. Hopefully the cable can reattach to it.

And you will find the job to be easier if you cut the pipe on the exit side of the valve...leaving enough pipe on the valve for a rubber no hub coupling to reconnect the piping back together.

Replaced the valve and cable assembly since it would either stick closed or open AND installed an end of pipe valve as a safeguard from a leaky valve.

I second this. It seems to be an issue with a lot of RVs. I put in this valve and I no longer have to worry about that mess.

It's really not a hard job to replace these valves. I had to replace one and clean another, but, the best tip I found on this forum was to lower the front of my rig as low as possble before beginning the work. This allows any residual fluids to go to the back of the tank away from the valve. This made for an almost mess free change.
The first time I was going to change the black water valve I bought a valterra valve, but, when I got the old valve out I found it was just full of toilet paper in the groove the valve slides through. I cleaned it out really well and re-installed the valve. Worked perfectly until we traded in a few years later and I still have a spare valve

A contractor once taught me a trick that might work. shut the valve and then fill the tank as full as possible with clean water. Then open the valve just slightly - might have to play with the amount. you want enough water to come through but not too much. with the valve being partially open the water flowing through generates turbulence in the area the gate seals. This can sometimes loosen the offending material and flush it out. This only works if it is indeed is material preventing the gate from closing. Obviously doesn't' work for a damaged valve or seal.

Just an update. The valve I posted above is the correct one, with just a slight modification to the cable connection it will work

Thankfully I took apart the valve and found what appreaed to be some cardboard stuck in the valve. Removed the debris and reassembled. No more leaks keeping the valve for later

I know this is an old post, but I've been using a Valterra twist on gate valve for years because our black tank valve leaked.
I finally took down the coroplast to fix it. I found the rubber valve seal had been crushed by the sliding gate. I replaced the seals. The factory valves are Bristol valves BTW).
Pretty easy job.
I drilled lubrication holes in the valves and sprayed in some silicon.
This works really good. They pull very smoothly now.

Valve lubrication making lube holes for silicon grease

I also added R23 insulation around the frame perimeter and across the entire bottom before putting the coroplast back up. Hopefully it will help prevent freezing tanks and vlaves.
First picture is the valve with the crushed seal.
The others is the added insulation.
