2020 Montana 3741FK Door Latch Issues

We just picked up our 2020 Montana 3741FK. The main door handle and latch seem like there is a design flaw. When opening the door from the outside, there is nothing to unlatch the screen door from the door frame. So we have to jerk the outside door open causing the latch that connects the two doors to ride over top of the screen door handle. Eventually this will break the plastic. Because of this, when opening the doors from the inside of the camper, we have to press the handle for the screen door AND the outside door at the same time. This does not seem right. Every other camper we had was built with a mechanism that connected the two doors so when we opened the door from the outside, both the screen door and outside door stayed paired and opened together.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I’m sorry if my description is clear as mud!

Thank you for any help!

simple adjustment to the screen door latch.
if you have the tools. and depends on the type latch you have.do you have photos of the main door latch and screen door latch.

^^^ this

When the door and screen door are connected the screen door latch should be fully engaged so that the screen catch is fully retracted and not functioning. There is likely an adjustment at the connection point that will force the screen latch to open more.

That problem is an adjustment issue with the screen door latch and the plastic part that attaches to the door that the plastic lever of the screen door locks into. The part that is screwed to the door must be adjusted so the screen door lever is adjusted far enough to keep the part that catches on the plastic strike on the door jam clear when the two doors are together. Photo one shows the latch lever under the plastic part that holds it down and with it in that position, it keeps the other end of the lever, in the second photo, that connects to the strike on the jam retracted far enough so the door can open. The third photo is of the strike on the door jam. You can see, I had to add extra screws to the part that holds the lever open because I had the same issue and got tired of having to fight getting the door open when that part would come loose. Also make sure the screws that hold the doors to the hinges are also tight, as they can cause issues with the door adjustments.
Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you got the solution to your issue.

One thing that you really need to watch on the FK model is the door being open when you're putting the front door side slide in. The front door will catch on the guide rail as it's going in, and will get jammed in there, bending your door, and messing up the edge of your door...

The service guy opened and closed it during the tour. My kiddos opened it when we first looked at it so it was already open when I walked in. We are going back for a 90-day visit for them to fix all the issues we notice during the first few months. I already have a list. I'll fix this one myself but there are other minor things I'll leave for them.

I'd be having a talk with the service manager asking that he not touch yours a again. That should have been addressed before delivery.

Welcome to the forum.

I have the 3731FL and I believe the layout is the same as far as the doors and slides go. In addition to having the door closed when bringing in that slide I also have to bring the Moryde steps down before bringing that slide out or you can't get the door open far enough to clear it with the steps. Also be careful when retracting the awning that that door is closed.

I had the same problem with my screen doors when I got mine home and it didn't happen during the pdi. I had to make several adjustments to get everything working right. That includes finding the second shut off for the ice maker.

As you see, you get lots of help on this forum. Enjoy the new rig and safe travels.

Oops, forget that part about the awning. I was looking at the wrong FK floorplan.

Nice job explaining that Bob. I had to do the same thing to my screen door, plus replace a couple screws that ere stripped out on the hinge allowing the screen door to sag and hang on the threshold. I drilled all the way through and put machine bolts and nuts to make sure they stay tight.

Thank you all so much! I removed the screen door, raised it about 1/4 inch, then reattached...problem solved!!

After reading many posts on here about the door being caught in the slideouts during retraction, I will make sure my door is closed whenever I bring the slideouts in!

Thank you all again!!

Does anyone know what the core of the main entry door consists of? The screws for the screen door catch like to work themselves out.
