Roof damage

This is some damage that was done to our daughter’s trailer while it was being parked in a large building at the fairgrounds for winter storage. The spotter didn’t think to look up, and the side of the roof was scraped by a couple of roof supports that are on a 45 degree angle. There is quite a bit of damage along the side. The spotter is sorry, and the fair board has no responsibility (it’s in the contract).

The trailer is quite safe for the winter, so whatever is done about this will happen in the spring. The repair shop our daughter deals with says she needs a new roof, for $10,000 (Canadian). DH figures Eternabond would do a great job.

Daughter can go through insurance, but there is fear of rising premiums. The trailer is covered under the house insurance for damage to the trailer and the car insurance for liability. Ours is the same way. She had a flood in her basement 2 years ago due to a failed sump pump. (The backup sump pump also failed). It was quite expensive to fix, as her basement is completely finished. So number of claims may be an issue.

I told her I would post this on the forum as we have quite a few intelligent and experienced members who may have some information or opinions to share. Do you think Eternabond is the way to go, or should she go for a whole new roof? She bought the trailer new in the spring of 2014.

A picture from up on the side further would really help. But if the scuffing is the limit of damage, then Eternabond is your friend. I have about 20 - 25 feet of it along different parts parts of the roof edge. (trees seem to hate me).

I would at least try to fix it. You can replace the roof anytime. Fixing it would be easy and cheap.

I can not see anything from the pic. I can tell you that when I first moved to where I live now, the camper roof was ripped open in 12 triangle spots by a low hanging branch. I folded them back down, cleaned up the roof around the damage and put Eturnabond tape on it and it. Never leaked.

I’m like the others if it’s not to bad eturnabond tape will work, I have some on some of my roof edge where a tree caught it.

Seems like a lot to replace the roof. I damaged my roof on a 2014 3582RL. I also crushed the aluminum piece under the roof material about 3 years ago and they repaired the aluminum piece and replaced the roof (2 AC's) and the estimate was $4400. I think I would get a different estimate.

This is the best picture I could get. It was pretty dark in there. If you are looking at it on a mobile device, you can zoom in on it better.

Thanks, people.

Looks like a fair amount of work to clean it and then tape it down, but I'd certainly try it first. Looks doable.

Loneoak: I was trying to say a picture from the top of the roof would be better to see the damage.

Sorry, that was not possible. It was parked inside the building for storage, and once it was in and the truck removed, other units were being parked in front of it. Her trailer is a Sunset Trail by Crossroads, and does not have a ladder, so the roof is not one you can walk on. Were were therefore unable to get up there and take a better look.

In the spring, once it is removed from the building, she can take it somewhere for repair. The only reason she is hesitating on going through the insurance is she is afraid of what it will do to her premiums, and also the possibility of the insurance company dropping her once renewal time comes around. This is because of the earlier aforementioned basement flood.

Without making a claim, why not ask the insurance company what will happen. If the results are not favorable they won't do anything if you don't file a claim.

Had ours replaced on our 2955RL last fall, and it was more than her quote. Choice is hers. I chose to have mine repaired completely, and whole new roof is required as it is one piece. Durabond seems to be a good product, but not permanent.

That's ("Eturnabond") and its very permanent if done correctly.

NOT always. Neighbor thought he had major damage and notified his insurance company. When he got the estimate it was much lower than expected so paid for it all out of pocket. Insurer still counted it as an accident in their records even though they paid nothing and did not send an adjuster.

no eternabond is only the best temporary fix for this if it's covered under insurance then I would most definitely get the rubber replaced. There is many reasons to why, but many factors can come into play to where it starts to peel or water gains access and then you get mold and many other issues, temporarily fix eternabond is great.

problem she will have is if she does a temporary fix for a year or so and then wants it done correctly SHE will have to pay the bill, not insurance.

Do the insurance.

Replacing an RV rubber roof is not for the faint at heart and if not done correctly could open up another can of worms making matters much worse.
