Another Mini Rally

We met up with Shirley and Gene (therenbme) in Sioux Falls last Tuesday and have made it as far as The Badlands. We are camping in the NAtional Park looking at all the beautiful peaks around us. What a beautiful sunset we had last night.

Just when you think you have it all, we hear from our friends Bob and Jan Gay (bobgay)and they are meeting us tomorrow in the Black Hills.

Is there any one else in this area that wants to join us?

Helen

Helen and Rich (RichFAA) just left here and are going to be at Custer the next week. Might try to get a hold of them too.

It's just amazing where you'll find Bob and Jan. Glad that you and Gene and Shirley are having fun. Wish we were there, too!. I guess you need to do some trip planning for next summer! Try to stay out of trouble!

Helen,
I hope all six of you have a blast in my old stomping grounds... Please take many pictures of the hills and Rapid City as I sure miss it lately. How long are you going to be there???

Dave, we have checked in for 9 days. You know that I will post a lot of pictures.

Wish you were here to Judy. Funny how many times your name comes in our conversations. All good too.

Helen,
What campground did you check into?

Judy,
I too was talking about you this morning as I met an old friend for lunch at Golden Corral. I have not been to a Golden Corral since I met Glen and you in Joliet. Great memories...

We are at Beaver Lake in Custer. Nice Park right next door to the KOA but a lot cheaper.

We are happy campers.

Can you tell that I can't stop grinning? We are having such a wonderful time with Bill & Helen. This part of the country is new for us. And it is incredibly gorgeous. We were in such a hurry to get to the rally last Sept. that we didn't have time to stop here. Bill & Helen are the most fantastic tour guides.....and fun to be with. We are so lucky. Dave, come on down. We are here til the 24th, and then on to Devils Tower and Yellowstone. Would love to see you.
Judy, we so wish you guys were here too. That would make it perfect.
We are looking forward to seeing Bob & Jan also. Haven't seem them since Elkhart.
Even though we don't have our Montana anymore, we are so grateful for all our MOC friends. Safe travels, everyone.
We're up for a mini-rally if anyone is in the area.

Shirley,

A trip back home.....I would love to be there with you all right now!

If you like fish, be sure to stop in at Millstone, a great restaurant down on West Main, across from the Baken Park shopping center. Every Friday they have their fish fry, of course you get either baked or fried, and two side dishes. If you want the all you can eat salad bar I think that will cost ya an extra 1.50. Be sure to get there early(around 4) as the locals all start piling in by 5pm. I remember going there every Friday as a kid before the family headed out to the lake for the weekend...

While your in Rapid City, a trip up Skyline Drive to dinosaur park is always a great time. You can see the dinosaur on top of the hill in the center of town. The view of Rapid City and the hills is great. Just an idea... Another idea, Canyon Lake Park on the west side of Rapid City. Just a really nice park with a lake and an island gazebo you can walk to. Take either Canyon Lake drive or Sheridan Lake Road westward and you will run right into it. I could go on for hours, but I know that your in good hands with Bill and Helen. Enjoy your time in the hills...

Don't want to Bob. We can't wait. If you get here early enough you can join our guys in a fantastic Fathers Day Brunch that Shirley and I plan on building. If you get here later I'm sure that there will be leftovers. Just drive safe.

Thanks for the info. for Shirley, Dave. We have never tried these places and they sound interesting. Keep the suggestions coming.

Dave....thank you so much for the suggestions. Helen & Bill are great, but we always appreciate additional information.
Wish you could join us.
It is so amazing here. We even saw a huge buffalo on the side of the road today. Feel like a kid and having a terrific time.

I think Rich and Helen are staying at the Custer KOA. I read in another post that they arrived safe and sound.

Helen and Shirley,
If you like steak, you may want to try Alpine Inn in Hill City. Fabulous steak! Of course, the drive through Spearfish Canyon is always amazing. Don't forget Deadwood, Helen. I hit a BIG jackpot up there at the Midnight Star casino, which is owned by Kevin Costner. I have also had some luck in the Gold Dust casino as well... Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are pretty spectacular. The biggest thing I can say is be sure and take the roads through the hills, the back roads that is. Highway 16 will run you up to Mt. Rushmore, but look at trips along 385 and 44. The sights and smells of the Black Hills is one of Gods great creations. Lead is also another neat area. While not much as far as tourism, what is left of the town from Homestake Mine is interesting. Plus the view through Boulder Canyon out of Sturgis is always enjoyable.

***I do want to edit my previous post about going to Canyon Lake. You can take either Canyon Lake road or Jackson Blvd. to get to Canyon Lake park. Sheridan Lake road will run you out into the hills, not to CLP. Sorry!

Casinos??? Now they'll NEVER see any of the sights! I think they're having way too much fun.

Wish we could have been with you all (Yes, I'm a Southerner).

To have "adelmoll" Helen as a tour guide or activities director--what a grand vision! That was my thought as I read her travel blog, but it became reality for the few days we were together in Fredericksburg.

I don't think I have seen anyone who has a more pleasant and positive attitude toward everything around her, and she doesn't miss anything! We would all be more happy if we could relax about problems and enjoy life as she does. Bill has a cheerleader for the experiences of life.

"Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative"--Helen puts this into practice every day.

Padre Dave, That is just about the nicest thing anybody has ever said about me. I am in shock.... It is so easy being positive when we are surrounded by people like you and Shirley and all of the great friends we have made on this forum.

Montana Dave, Thanks again for more ideas. We have already planned on doing most of these things that you suggested and we are not missing any of the back roads. They are the best although Bill did get a little car sick on the tunnel road yesterday with all the switchbacks. And he was doing the driving. He wouldn't have been able to do it at all if someone else was driving. We all agree that seeing the faces for the first time as you go thru the tunnel is the most incredible way to get your first picture. Keep the suggestions coming on great places to eat. We seem to be eating our way across America and don't want to miss the best.

Deadwood is one of my favorite places and the ride up has some incredible picture perfect lakes to stop at. I remember the last time we were there I came out a couple of hundred ahead at one of the casinos. The reason I came out ahead is because no one would let me stay long enough to spend it. We can't wait to do the Canyon Road. Shirley loves the water as much as I do and the falls are one of our favorites.

Fordzilla... We will try to get ahold of Rich and Helen and see if they have any time to join us for a bit.

Dave, you are so right. We have had an incredible journey with Bill and Helen. One we will not soon forget. They are both wonderful and kind people.
Bob and Jan have joined us, and we are having a blast. They, also, are the best. That is the why, even though we have had to become SOB's, we continue on the MOC Forum. We have met so many fabulous people who have become our friends.
Rich and Helen stopped by this morning, and we invited them to have dinner with us, if they return from sightseeing in time.
It is getting to be a mid-size rally, not a mini anymore.
Anyone else around here ?????
Dave......where are you !
