AT&T Netgear AirCard 815S - tethering

I have an AT&T Netgear AirCard 815S. It is working well. But I have 2 questions

The battery is charged from a USB3 cable. Once the battery is fully charged it says “please disconnect from charger”. Since I do not use this as a mobile hotspot but as a permanent hotspot in my RV, will I damage the battery by leaving it plugged in continuously?

If I plug the USB3 cable into my laptop I believe this is “tethering” the air card to my laptop. Does this mean that my laptop is connected directly through the air card to the Internet without using the Wi-Fi feature? What is an advantage of this tethering versus using the Wi-Fi? Is one faster than the other?

I can answer your first question. I’ve had 2 MIFI boxes from Verizon. They both swelled so much the back wouldn’t stay on. The tech at Verizon said leaving the hooked caused the problem and it was dangerous because they could over heat. I put a timer on mine and charge it a few hours morning and evening.

I have the NetGear MR1100 router, and Lynwood is right. The battery will eventually swell and cause problems. Also, you are killing the life of the battery by leaving it plugged in.
You can tether the NetGear using USB to your laptop, or simply charge it. Tethering with the USB cable can potentially be faster as USB has a faster throughput than Wifi, however, you probably won't notice a difference as the limiting factor will still be the speed of the connection on the AT&T side of things. In most cases, there's no real world benefit to tethering vs. using the wifi. Also the Wifi will allow other connections besides just your laptop.
