Direct tv vs. Dish Network
Back in the fall, Dish Network up and dropped OLN from their line up, which has perturbed me as I watched it about as much as any due to their coverage of cycling events. I have been thinking about switching to Direct tv as they offer OLN. How do those of you who have it feel about the service and how difficult is it to use when out in your Montanas?

Ditto here too, I have had Direct at the house for 3+ years and take 2 reciever with me when I travel with no problem. Had Dish for 5 years before and it was harder to set up with having to deal with 2 satalites 110 and 119 for all my channels.

NO EXPERIENCE WITH DIRECT TV, BUT UNDERSTAND IT IS EASIER TO SET UP THAN DISH.

Friend Wordsmith, we take an extra "dish" and our one receiver (Direct TV) from the house and have no trouble setting up, except in heavy trees. We have never had Dish, so we can't make a comparison. Our home "dish" is an oval with 3 modules (for local channels), but we take a regular round, one module "dish" when we travel and it works just fine -- no local channels, of course.

We've had Dishnetwork for 7 or 8 years and camped with it for 4 or 5. Set up has been a breeze (use a Bullseye mount) takes about 5-10 min to set up start to finish. I would say to go with the one that has the programming you like!

We have dish network and used it all last year without any trouble. I use a signal strenth meter to set it up and it takes about 5 to 10 minutes. I have not had direct tv for a long time.

We've had DirecTV for several years now. No problems - love it.

Started with DISH, but had to pay extra to get Speed TV (back in the day) so I went with Direct TV and never looked back. I have used my Direct receiver on the Monty and can set up in about 10-15 min.
I use an antenna mount that clamps to my ladder. If I'm in the clear and have the ladder on the south side, the antenna is about 4 -5 feet off the ground, other wise it is clamped to the rail on top of the unit.

Be sure to get a "satellite finder" to use for setting up with either Dir or Dish. Makes the job a lot easier. ~$30 at Radio Shack, but I saw LOTS of them on sale via E-bay for considerably less. They are all pretty much the same, so would seem a good E-bay item.

Thanks for the input, folks! I went ahead last night and signed up with DirecTV. Hopefully, we can have it installed the first full week in April when I return from camping for ten days but will still be on spring break.
patodonn, I have that and other elements needed, including the Bullseye mount Ishler mentioned earlier. I just never used it as the hook ups to our Dish Network DVR never seemed to be right.

I believe the Bullseye mount and signal strength meter are the best investments for portable operation. The first secret is to have the mast plumb and the Bullseye takes cate of that. The next is adjusting for the strongest signal and the meter takes care of that. With a little practice it's amazing how quick the setup can be.

Mike, I heard about the Bullseye from “another forum,” one that I no longer frequent, but that was one of the positive things that I learned from it. IT feels like a solid product, and I have heard nothing but good things about it. Hopefully, we will be giving it a trial run soon.

What system is in a Kingdome? Either one? I saw a Kingdome and it really looked small... too small to hold the size dish that I see on campground tripods. Any comments on this?

Dave,
I am considering going with either the Kingdome or the KVH TracVision dome. Would rather have the convience of a fully automatic and always ready to go dome, rather than carrying around a dish and tripod having to try and find a signal, get the thing level and so on...

What system do they use, Dave? Directv or Dish? Either? Looks like a very small area - the one I saw any way.

My feeling on any fixed system, I have seen several people with these units have reception problems due to being unable to have clear site to satellite. I have Direct, much easier to set-up compared to Dish.
I use a portable tripod that has been the only way to get a signal in some of the campgrounds that I have stayed in, just a thought.
Good Luck

I guess it is where you camp. perhaps in the south west where there are few trees and the ground is fairly level the dome works OK, but here in the east. to many trees, to many hills. We have a few in our camping club that have the dome and they can rarely use it due to the obstructions. Beside we can set up the direct Tv on the tripod in less that 15 Mins and with 100 ft 0f RG-6 cable have always been able to get a clear shot at the sat.
