Residential Freezer Issue

After sitting a few weeks with the Samsung Residential Refrigerator / Freezer off, I started it today and the Fridge works fine, but the freezer will not cool down. It is 78 degrees inside the freezer. I cycled the power on and off at the breaker with the inverter turned off. The fridge cycled and started. The freezer has a low growl in the compressor. Any ideas how to get it started? Nothing is froze up. The fan sounds like it is running. I'm only drawing 3 amps on my EMS power protection system. It should be higher than that. The fridge is the only thing on right now.

This is in a 2017 3791RD

Don't the Samsung's use a Dual Compressor System, one for the Fridge section and the second for the Freezer section. If so, sounds like the Freezer compressor is having issues.

Thank you for the reply. I’m not sure about how it works. This morning the fridge is 51 degrees. And the freezer is still 71 degrees inside. I’m going to pick up a mini fridge to make it through until I can find a service tech. Samsung says they have mobile techs. I hope I can get customer service to assist me.

OK, here's info from the Samsung site on their 18 cu ft Fridge:
Samsung's Twin Cooling System® maintains cooling air for the refrigerator and freezer separately. The refrigerator air is kept at higher, near-commercial grade humidity levels to keep perishable fruits and vegetables from spoiling quickly.** Drier freezer air means less freezer burn for better-tasting frozen foods.
Not sure if this is you exact model, but I knew I had read an add where they talked about dual system for fridge and freezer.

Residential Freezer Issue'

Ok. I called samsung. They were very good about getting a service tech to come out to my location. Anything with the compressor is under warranty for 5 years. After a diagnoses the tech tells me we have a leak in the system someplace, and that is not under warranty because it’s not the compressor that’s leaking. To find the leak would cost more than a new fridge. He tells me he can put some leak sealer in the system to run through all the pipes. If it’s a small leak this would fix it. I decided to go that route. So he did that. It worked. He then recharged the fridge and it has been on for a week now. Freezer is -2 deg. Fridge is 38 deg. It cost me $263 for the repair and service call.

I think you have been scammed. I had an AC unit with a leak and the tech found it in a couple of minutes. If I remember correctly he sprayed something along the copper pipe looking for a colour change I believe.

How can the technician tell you it is not the compressor leaking without pulling the frig out of the cabinet? Our Samsung had a problem with the left door seal resulting in moisture buildup in bottom of unit. Samsung tech adjusted it, no more problems. When I made the appointment for service I was told if it required pulling from cabinet they would not do it.

I agree. Without pulling the unit, the tech cannot tell if the compressor is leaking unless the leak is in an obvious place that is readily visible. BTW, as it turns out, our problem was that the freezer drawer wasn't closed all the way. Working fine now. The alarm is very quiet on this thing. Ours at home will wake the dead.

In my unit the tech did pull the fridge out and opened up a panel over the compressor. He did quite a bit of work before he decided to try the leak sealer. So far. It’s still running well. I’m happy for now.

Sounds like a reasonable price to get it fixed.

I have a 2018 Montana. We are on our second Samsung residential fridge.

First one the freezer worked, and the refrigerator didn’t.

Our second one the refrigerator is working, and now the freezer isn’t.

My conclusion: Samsung Residential Refrigerators are garbage. I have had this Montana for only a couple of years, and the refrigerator/freezer issue has made owning it a bad dream. I love our Montana’s floorplan and it’s sad this is a constant disappointment. Last time the Montana folks monitoring this web site assisted after numerous runarounds. I only hope they read this and reach out again to help.
