Ferries are from my experience, are expensive in comparison to driving.
There are so many benefits though.
You get to experience your trip in a different way. They have to load the ferries according to weight and balance of the ship. Relaxing and the ride is a great relief from over the road travel.
If a ferry is the only way to get there, You have no option.
Campgrounds on the islands are more expensive as well as food due to Transportation costs.
But money is not everything and nothing can make up for the experience and sights and sounds, Ocean air and sunrises and sunsets. Memories will last forever.
Best wishes and good luck with your search and journey .

We are heading that way again this year if they let us out of the house here in Md. and we are now 42` with the bike rack on the back`w/ a long bed dually like to know what you found out. Yes it saves a ton of miles to go that way and a ferry ride is always fun.
