Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.9 Cummins
Traded my Diesel pusher motor home off and bought a 3400 RL with a Dodge Ram diesel with a 5.9 engine (3/4 ton). It's supposed to develope 325 HP. The folks I've talked to say it's plenty of engine to pull a 37' fifth wheel. I'm brand new to towing with a truck (motorhome before), Is that engine enough to pull hills etc. I believe it will get around 18 mpg on highway but don't know what it will get towing?
Any help with these questions would be GREATLY appreciated.
We pick the new Montana up Thursday..Can't wait

I'm not sure what year Dodge you have but I pull a 2980 with mine and have no complaints. Mine is a 2003 with the 250hp 480 torque 5.9. However I have done some work to mine to keep up with the newer models. They have done some changes since 2003. Al

The Dodge I bought is a 2005. Thanks so much for your replies, I'm not sure what rear end it has in it, whatever it comes with stock I guess..

Hammer: You can see by my profile what we use. It does a fine job anywhere we go. Our gross combination weight loaded for the road is about 17,700 lbs. We generally get about 12.5 towing. I set the cruise about 1800 rpm and that gets me 67 mph. You'll not a problem pulling any road or mountain passes with that unit. Don't worry about going UP them: Make sure you have control going down!

Hammer,
We pull a 319BHD with our 06 Dodge. works like a champ, no issues pulling or stopping. The only thing I am adding is airbags in the rear to keep people from flashing us at night. Our pin weight is around 2200 and GCW is around 19000.

Like everyone else said, you'll be fine & will enjoy towing the trailer with the truck. Be careful when towing, people will cut you off when leaving extra distance for stopping as I am sure everyone has had this to happen.
Enjoy the new truck & trailer. Se ya camping somewhere!

You should have no problems, I am running a 2001 3/4ton with 3:55 gears, no problems. Our 3400 is pushing the max weight and my only problem is keeping it down to 65. I do have a few mods and pull about 625 lb/ft torque and 325hp.
